Indigestion is often caused by eating too quickly, too much, or consuming too many fatty, highly acidic foods. Drinking too much coffee, alcohol, or sugary soft drinks also affects stomach function and causes indigestion, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Indigestion, persistent bloating combined with persistent abdominal pain may be a sign of ovarian cancer.

The American Cancer Society states that indigestion is also one of the early warning signs of ovarian cancer, especially if the indigestion is persistent and recurs more than 12 times a month.

Older women have a higher risk of ovarian cancer compared to younger women. Cases of ovarian cancer in young women are rare and more treatable. A study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that a high-fat diet increases the risk of ovarian cancer by up to six times.

Persistent indigestion may be a sign of ovarian cancer if it is accompanied by the following symptoms:

Bloating

Women with ovarian cancer often experience bloating, causing their abdomen to temporarily swell to the point where they can no longer wear clothes. Studies show that approximately 86% of women with ovarian cancer experience bloating and gas.

Persistent abdominal pain

Ovarian cancer not only causes indigestion but also lower abdominal pain. If the abdominal pain is persistent, the cancer may have spread to the pelvis or abdomen. Patients describe this pain as feeling like someone is squeezing their pelvis with clamps.

Additionally, another warning sign of ovarian cancer is pelvic pain during intercourse. This is because the cancerous tumor in the ovary is pressing on the vagina.

A study published in the journal Gynecologic Oncology surveyed the symptoms of 574 ovarian cancer patients. Nearly 40% of them reported experiencing pelvic pain.

Loss of appetite, weight loss

In a study published in the international journal BJOG on gynecology and reproductive health, scientists found that approximately 40% of women with ovarian cancer experience a loss of appetite and feel full quickly at mealtimes. This loss of appetite can lead to weight loss.

However, even without loss of appetite, ovarian cancer can cause unexplained weight loss. Specifically, patients may lose 5% of their body weight in a month, and this weight loss may not be due to dieting or exercise. This is because the cancerous tumor can cause the body to overstimulate metabolism, burning more calories and leading to unexplained weight loss, according to Healthline .
