After the work Carrying the burden... carrying the burden... published in 2020, receiving the award from the Vietnam Writers Association and the award from the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, director Xuan Phuong continued to release his second memoir Carving away... carving coming (Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House).
On September 24, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association organized an exchange program and launched the memoir "Kill Go...Kill Come" , which is considered the next chapters of the author's life - a talented woman who is 95 years old and is also nicknamed "The Iron Lady of Vietnamese Painting". Comrade Nguyen Van Nen, Politburo member, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, sent congratulatory flowers, as an expression of love and affection to director Xuan Phuong.
Director and writer Xuan Phuong, whose real name is Nguyen Thi Xuan Phuong, was born in 1929 in Hue into a royal family. As a child, she lived with her family in Da Lat. Her father was an Inspector of Education and principal of the only primary school in Da Lat at that time.
At the age of 16, she decided to join the revolution. During her time in the Viet Bac resistance base until peace was restored in the North, she worked in many jobs, before switching to studying and making war documentaries. She was the only female director and war reporter in Vietnam working at the Television Department, the predecessor of today's Vietnam Television.
After retiring, with the urge to do something to introduce Vietnamese culture abroad, she had the idea of opening an art gallery and immediately started doing it. Lotus Art Gallery - Established in 1991, is one of the first private art galleries in Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, the gallery has had more than 30 years of bringing art closer to domestic and international art lovers.
The memoir " Khack Di... Khac Den" is a journey back to the past of director Xuan Phuong, where valuable experiences and life events are written by her in a realistic and delicate way. Turning each page, a picture of director Xuan Phuong's life appears.
Writer Bich Ngan, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, called director Xuan Phuong a woman who has “carried the burden” all her life. That is not only her own fate, but in a way she also carries the “fate” of her compatriots and her nation on her shoulders. Carrying the burden is not only a responsibility but also the life of a patriotic heart through her tireless journey of artistic creation.
“Also on the journey of “Carrying the burden”, soaked in sweat and tears, the memoir “Carve away…carve come ” opens up for us to see more clearly the journey of bringing paintings and Vietnamese culture to the world. In addition to the intelligence, talent and extraordinary courage of writer, director and art collector Xuan Phuong, there are also dangerous twists and turns and beautiful colors of aspiration, love, happiness and sadness in the pain of human fate”, writer Bich Ngan expressed.
As one of the people who loved and read the memoir Khac di… khac den quite early, poet Bui Phan Thao was impressed with the stories and lessons that director Xuan Phuong sent in the book. According to him, the stories are like reminders, but through them, younger people and later generations can reflect and draw many lessons.
“There is no such thing as early or late. Any age can create a career. The problem is talent, will, determination, luck, opportunities that come and seize them in time. “Don’t be discouraged by difficulties, don’t limit yourself,” she said. That is the reason why she refused to accept her fate as a parking attendant in Hanoi that the neighborhood had favored her with, to confidently “start a business” by opening an art gallery when she was over 60, the age that others choose to retire and live comfortably,” poet Bui Phan Thao shared.
