Assessing the current situation and factors promoting cross-border migration between Vietnam and Cambodia

On November 15, in Hanoi, the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a workshop to discuss the assessment of the current situation and factors promoting cross-border migration between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Deputy Director of the Consular Department Phan Thi Minh Giang delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

The workshop was attended by representatives from relevant ministries, branches and functional agencies of Tay Ninh province. The workshop aimed to share the research content “Assessing the current situation and factors promoting cross-border migration between Vietnam and Cambodia”, which was drawn from a survey in Tay Ninh province.

This study was conducted by experts from the Institute of Sociology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to assess the current situation and factors motivating people to move across borders. According to the research results, most of the movement across borders is to find jobs.

The study is an activity within the framework of the Project “Supporting evidence-based policies and programs in the context of cross-border migration in Vietnam” jointly implemented by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and IOM in Vietnam. To support the development of the study, the Consular Department chaired an interdisciplinary working group to work and survey at 4 border gates and some communes of Tay Ninh province.

In the opening session of the Workshop, Ms. Phan Thi Minh Giang, Deputy Director of the Consular Department, assessed the findings from the survey, although only conducted in Tay Ninh, but it partly showed the current situation and factors promoting people to move across the border, thereby contributing to the improvement of policies in related areas, including migration and displacement issues.

IOM Vietnam representative, Ms. Mitsue Pembroke, Director of Projects and Partnerships, hopes that the research results will promote exchanges and coordination among relevant agencies to build comprehensive policies to protect the rights of displaced people and migrants.

At the workshop, representatives of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the Border Guard Command of Tay Ninh province also presented papers on issues related to labor - employment and border gate management, immigration control. The delegates actively discussed and contributed ideas on the research results for experts to continue to improve.
