In the recent semi-final match of the 2025 World Table Tennis Championships in Macao (China), Hugo Calderano caused a shock when he defeated Chinese player Wang Chuqin (who had long held the world No. 1 position and is now ranked world No. 2) with a score of 4-3.

Hugo Calderano's victory was a huge shock to Chinese table tennis, especially when Wang Chuqin had a 3-1 lead in the 7-game match (the player who reached 4 first would win).

However, the Brazilian player still showed his bravery when he won 3 consecutive games after that to win 4-3, winning the right to play in the final match.

Hugo Calderano's opponent in the final is also a Chinese table tennis star, Lin Shidong - the world's number 1 ranked player and in very good form at this tournament.

However, the Brazilian player once again shocked Chinese table tennis, defeating Lin Shidong quickly with a score of 4-1 to win the championship of the tournament.

This achievement makes Hugo Calderano the first South American to win the men's singles world championship without being Asian or European. He is the first South American to win all three major tournaments of world table tennis (including the Olympics, the World Championships and the World Table Tennis Cup).

The victory of the 1996-born player also broke the dominance of Chinese table tennis at the world championship since 2017. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva personally praised Hugo Calderano's feat "for writing a new chapter in the history of Brazilian sports ".
