On the morning of July 20, despite the rain in Hanoi, many parents brought their children to the 2024 University and College Admissions Consulting Day to receive advice on registering their admission wishes.
Quite a few candidates came with their father or mother. Many groups of parents from Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho provinces... came together to ask and receive advice for their children.
Does the first choice have priority over the following choices?
Sharing at the 2024 University and College Admissions Consulting Day in Hanoi, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that on the first day the admission system opened, many candidates registered their wishes on the system. However, there are still 10 more days for candidates to carefully consider, choose and arrange their wishes.
Students who have received early admission results from schools must still register their wishes with the admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training.
"Last year, we had to deal with cases where candidates were so confident that they had been admitted early that they went on vacation without registering their admission wishes in the system. When they learned that they had to register, the system had already closed," said Ms. Thuy.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy also noted that candidates need to keep their account to access the system confidential, because if it is revealed, others may be able to adjust and change their admission wishes.
Ms. Thuy advises not to register for too many wishes, but to consider and allocate the number of wishes (including the majors you love and majors with high chances of passing) to limit the risk of failing all wishes.

A parent asked if the first choice is given priority over the following choices? Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy said that virtual filtering is essentially arranging the candidates' choices, to confirm that the candidate is admitted to only one choice among the choices that meet the admission requirements.
Candidates need to rank their preferences in order of priority (desire, preference). If a candidate passes the preference ranked number 1 in the system, the system will not consider it further, even if the candidate meets the requirements to pass other preferences.
As for the schools, according to current regulations, schools do not prioritize accepting all candidates with the first choice before considering the second or third choice... but will consider all choices fairly, and qualified candidates will be considered for admission. Therefore, the order of choices only has meaning to the candidates.
Ms. Thuy also said that candidates do not necessarily have to put their early admission wishes first, but can put them later if that is not their favorite wish.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Thi Hien - Head of Training Management Department, Foreign Trade University - shared a "formula" to classify admission wishes into 3 groups: The dream group is the wishes that candidates love the most; The group with the right ability is the wishes that candidates want to study and have a high chance of passing; The group with a high chance of passing to "prevent failure".
However, the "keyword" for candidates to remember when prioritizing is "favorite", which means ranking by level of preference.

Is IELTS certificate still valid at this time?
Some parents question the value of the IELTS certificate at this time, in case candidates have not used the certificate for early admission.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Thi Hien said: Depending on the regulations of each school, it is still possible to consider admission by combining international language certificates such as IELTS with a combination of high school graduation exam scores.
In addition, schools can also consider admission based on exam scores. For foreign language combinations, schools may allow candidates to use IELTS certificates to convert to replace the foreign language exam in the foreign language combination. The conversion will depend on each school's regulations.
Ms. Hien also said that this year, some schools will set the graduation score threshold for the exam subjects in accordance with the admission combination that candidates have registered for by the early admission method (considering the transcript score). For example, the Foreign Trade University has a score threshold of 24. In this case, candidates can also use the IELTS certificate to replace the foreign language exam score to reach the school's prescribed threshold.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh, Vice Principal of Phenilkaa University, further explained that candidates with IELTS certificates need to carefully review each school's admission plan to know how the certificate is used, how it is converted, and when the certificate can be used.
Experts also note that during the admission period, candidates only need to provide copies of foreign language certificates, but after candidates enroll, schools will be responsible for post-inspection to verify the validity of these certificates.
College has many job opportunities?
Dr. Dong Van Ngoc, principal of Hanoi College of Electromechanics, said that studying at college is different from studying at university in that it focuses more on practical learning (accounting for 70% of study time).
Many colleges also cooperate with businesses to build training programs that are close to job needs in various fields. Students can also study at businesses. Therefore, students at vocational schools can easily meet the requirements of real job positions.
"Studying at college has many job opportunities and advantages, it's not true that only university graduates can easily find a job," Mr. Ngoc shared.
Failed this year, how will the admission be next year?
If you fail this year, can you take the exam and be considered for admission in 2025? In response to this question from parents, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy said: "Candidates who are 12th graders this year can still take the high school graduation exam in 2025. In principle, candidates who study a program will take the exam according to that program.
Candidates can also use the exam results to apply for university and college admission next year. However, schools may reserve fewer quotas for this group of candidates, so they will have less advantage than if they applied this year.
