The 2024 high school graduation exam will consist of 5 subjects: 3 independent subjects (mathematics, literature, and foreign language); 1 combined natural science subject (physics, chemistry, and biology); and 1 combined social science subject (history, geography, and civics ) (for students studying the general high school curriculum) or history and geography (for students studying the continuing education high school curriculum). Of these subjects, only literature will use essay questions; the remaining subjects will use multiple-choice questions.

In this system, candidates are required to take three independent exams: mathematics, literature, and a foreign language, and can choose one of two combined subject exams.

Students studying the high school curriculum will be required to take 4 out of 5 exams for high school graduation, including 3 independent exams in mathematics, literature, and a foreign language, and choose one of 2 combined subject exams.

Candidates who are students of continuing education programs are not required to take a foreign language exam, but they can register to take the foreign language exam to use the results for university and college admissions.

For combined subject exams, candidates may only register for one combined subject exam or the component subjects within a single combined subject exam (for independent candidates). Candidates may register to take a foreign language exam different from the foreign language they are studying in high school.

2024 is the last year that students will take the high school graduation exam under the 2006 general education program. According to current information from the Ministry of Education and Training, students will be tested on the program they studied under. Basically, the exam structure and format will remain stable as in 2023; however, it is expected that there will be a reasonable increase in content related to practical application in some subjects, gradually moving towards a competency-based assessment approach that aligns with the goals and requirements for developing students' competencies and qualities, and gradually increasing the differentiation level to achieve the set objectives of the exam.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's announcement, candidates who did not pass the 2024 high school graduation exam and those from previous years will be allowed to take the graduation exam based on the general education curriculum they have studied, ensuring that all students' rights are fully protected in the 2025 high school graduation exam and beyond.

The Ministry is expected to issue the regulations and guidelines for the 2024 high school graduation exam in March.
