Republicans Win Florida Special Election Again, Despite Democrats' Campaign Spending

The Republican majority in the US House of Representatives will be 220 to 213 after the election results are certified in two races. The special election comes as two seats have become vacant following the recent deaths of two Democratic lawmakers.

This is the first federal election since President Donald Trump took office on January 20. And the results show that Americans generally still appreciate Mr. Trump's work, despite his controversial policies of cutting government and cracking down on immigration.

Republican Jimmy Patronis, the state's chief financial officer who is backed by Trump, is expected to win the county's special election, NBC News projects.

Patronis ran against Democratic candidate Gay Valimont, an anti-gun violence activist. The Democratic Party contributed more than $6 million to Valimont in the short election, far more than Patronis, but he still did not fare well.

Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Randy Fine is expected to become the district's next representative, according to election projections from NBC News. Fine will represent the state's 6th congressional district in the northeastern United States, which includes Daytona Beach.

Fine's Democratic opponent, Josh Weil, a public school educator, outraised Fine with nearly $9 million in contributions, but also lost.
