As of November 8, Republicans had won at least 211 seats, seven short of a majority in the 435-seat House of Representatives. There are still 24 seats to be counted. Previously, Trump’s party had won a majority in the Senate, winning 53 of the 100 seats.
Democrats have secured just 199 seats in the House of Representatives. It could take several more days for the results of the House election to be known.

With Republicans likely to control both houses of Congress, President-elect Donald Trump will have room to pursue his policies including sweeping tax cuts, energy deregulation and border security.
Democrats need to win 18 of the remaining 24 seats to take control of the House, and their hopes were boosted by victories in the traditional battleground states of California and New York.
A majority in the Senate would allow Republicans to approve cabinet appointments, judges and other personnel for Mr Trump’s new administration, but they would fall short of the 60 votes needed to quickly pass most legislation.
