Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), has vowed to work toward the orderly resignation of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Mr Han apologized after the impeachment motion against Mr Yoon was dropped after most lawmakers from Yoon’s ruling PPP boycotted the December 7 parliamentary vote, which requires a two-thirds majority to pass. The PPP holds 108 seats in the 300-member parliament.
"I regret the situation that has developed since the declaration of martial law," Mr. Han told reporters at the National Assembly.
Mr Han, who led 18 PPP lawmakers in voting to reject Mr Yoon's martial law decree hours after its announcement on the night of December 3, reiterated his earlier stance that Mr Yoon's move was a "clear and serious violation of the Constitution and the law".
"The PPP will push for an orderly resignation of the president to minimize chaos," he said, adding that he would consult with the main opposition Democratic Party to pursue the process in a "predictable and transparent manner".
"Mr. Yoon will be stripped of his duties until he resigns, and the prime minister will handle state affairs after consulting with the party," Mr. Han said. Mr. Han reiterated that President Yoon has pledged to abide by the party's decision regarding his term.
After the impeachment vote against Yoon was dropped, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, a PPP member, pledged to do his best to stabilize the situation. The PPP also explained that the reason its lawmakers boycotted the impeachment vote was that they did not want the country to fall into chaos and pledged to resolve the situation in an orderly manner.
Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Party has vowed to impeach Mr. Yoon at all costs.
