Statistics Canada said that in 2022, the country's population increased by a record 1.05 million people, bringing the total population to 39.57 million. Of which, about 96% of the increase was due to international migration.
This increase helps Canada maintain its position as the country with the fastest population growth rate in the Group of Seven (G7). In 2022, the population growth rate in this country is 2.7%, a rate that will lead to the population doubling in about 26 years.
According to Reuters, immigrants play an important role in boosting the economy of countries with aging populations like Canada. Since 2015, the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has implemented many measures to attract immigrants with the aim of expanding the workforce.
Canada will welcome 437,180 immigrants in 2022. The total number of temporary residents in the country also increased by 607,782 in the same year. Statscan said the figures represent the highest increase on record and reflect the country's high immigration targets.
However, Statistics Canada flagged some potential challenges ahead if the 2022 population growth trend continues. “The increase in permanent and temporary immigration could also present challenges related to housing, infrastructure and transportation, and the provision of services to residents,” the agency said, CNN reported.
Under a three-year plan released in November 2022, the Canadian government wants to continue increasing its annual immigration target, aiming to grant permanent residence to 465,000 people in 2023 and increase that target to 500,000 people in 2025.
