Lam Dong people pay 260,000 VND/hour to pump water but it's still not enough to water coffee, no rain for half a year

In late March, Dan Viet reporters recorded a prolonged drought and heat wave in Lam Dong province. According to local people, from November 2023 to now, the province has only had a few rains with small amounts of rain and short duration such as in Bao Lam and Di Linh districts. Therefore, people are concerned that if this situation continues, many coffee areas will be affected, withered, and lose productivity.

Many coffee areas of people in Lam Dong have had their leaves burned and withered due to prolonged drought, with no rain for nearly half a year.

Present at the garden of Mrs. Tran Thi Xuyen's family (residing in Hamlet 3, Dai Lao Commune, Bao Loc City, Lam Dong Province), the reporter recorded that the coffee trees were wilting and the leaves were turning yellow due to lack of water for a long time. In particular, the small coffee fruits could not grow and were increasingly shriveled due to lack of water, the risk of crop failure for Mrs. Xuyen's family would increase if the drought continued.

Ms. Tran Thi Xuyen said: "Currently, in Dai Lao commune, many families do not even have water to drink, let alone water to irrigate their crops. Now people have to pay 250,000-260,000 VND/hour to water their crops, but there is still no water. That is why, for nearly 6 months now, the coffee has been gradually drying up, greatly affecting productivity. My family has 5,000 square meters of land to grow coffee. Before, it was able to bloom and set fruit like a toothpick, but now it has all withered and cannot grow due to lack of water.

Now the drought is very serious, many people have money but still do not have water to irrigate their crops. Hopefully it will rain soon so that people have water for daily use, crops can grow, and ensure productivity for this year's crop."

Not only lacking water for irrigation and production, people in Bao Loc City (Lam Dong Province) are also worried about the lack of water for daily life. Also in Dai Lao Commune, local people said that the system of dug wells and drilled wells has been exhausted because there has been no rain for many months.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Ai (Dai Lao Commune, Bao Loc City) said that although she lives on an asphalt road and does business, her family and the surrounding people have had to spend money to buy water for daily use at a price of 120,000 VND/m3 for the past few months. Therefore, people have to save water little by little to ensure their lives.

Ms. Ai turned on the faucet but only a few drops came out and then turned it off.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Pham Cong Huong - Vice Chairman of Dai Lao Commune People's Committee said: "In the past 3 months, there has been no rain in Dai Lao Commune, so people lack water for daily life, as well as irrigation water. Therefore, Dai Lao Commune People's Committee has proposed to the authorities to connect the clean water system from Bao Loc City so that people have water for daily life.

In addition, we also coordinate with the city to use fire trucks to transport water to water tanks to provide water for daily use for people. At the same time, we also call on and propagate people to use water economically, ensuring life."

Many lakes in Lam Dong province are drying up very quickly due to prolonged drought.

Faced with prolonged heat and drought, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee has requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, People's Committees of districts and cities to implement necessary measures to store water, study methods for installing and operating field pumping stations (when necessary) for areas suffering from drought and lack of water for production. Ensure adequate supply of domestic water for residential areas, schools, hospitals and medical facilities in the area.

At the same time, Lam Dong province also directed relevant agencies to proactively implement water supply solutions, not to let water shortages for daily life and livestock farming affect the health and lives of local people.
