On the afternoon of April 14, the showcase of the film "Detective Kien: The Headless Case" held at the Opera House (Hanoi) made an impression when the cast and director Victor Vu had an impressive performance in traditional Vietnamese costumes.
Set in Vietnam during the feudal period of the late 19th century, "Detective Kien: The Headless Case" is a detective film with horror elements, telling the story of the talented detective Kien's crime-solving journey. Two years after the film "The Last Wife", director Victor Vu continues to exploit the detective story line in the novel "Lake of Resentment" by author Hong Thai.
Traditional costumes are rarely fully recreated on Vietnamese screens. The film has made a remarkable effort in restoring Vietnamese historical costumes with nearly 1,000 hand-made costumes appearing in the film, from the main character to each supporting actor.
The distinctive feature of the film’s costumes is the clear hierarchy of social classes. The wealthy often wear silk ao dai, conical hats or elaborate scarves. The working class appear in simple four-panel dresses. Every detail, every costume is designed based on careful historical research.
During the film’s showcase, director Victor Vu not only shared about the importance of traditional costumes but also expressed his artistic views. He emphasized that filmmaking should aim for lasting value instead of just chasing temporary box office achievements.
With serious investment in traditional costumes, "Detective Kien: The Headless Case" is not only a cinematic work but also a bridge between the past and the present, contributing to introducing the beauty of Vietnamese traditions to audiences at home and abroad.
The film will officially premiere on April 30 in theaters nationwide. Before that, the film will have special screenings from 6 p.m. on April 25-27./.
