German police said on February 13 that a car drove into a group of protesters in the southwestern German city of Munich, injuring at least 20 people.

The people who were hit by the car were taking part in a protest related to a strike organized by the Verdi union, according to local BR television. The protesters were employees of local childcare services, according to a statement from the Verdi union, according to CNN.

A witness said police fired at the car after it veered into the protesters' path. Police detained the driver. At least 20 people were injured. "I saw a man lying under the car," the witness told Germany's BR24 program.

The incident took place just before the Munich Security Conference - an important event scheduled to open on February 14, bringing together top world leaders to discuss hot global issues. US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to attend the conference.

The Munich Security Conference venue is just 1.5 km away from the scene of the car accident.
