Speaking at the rally, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long emphasized: HIV/AIDS is a dangerous pandemic, a threat to human health and the future of the race. HIV/AIDS prevention and control is a major concern of all mankind. Responding to World AIDS Day is to remind us to join hands to fight AIDS, at the same time demonstrate our determination to protect public health, and move towards a society without fear and discrimination when living with people living with HIV.

In Vietnam, HIV/AIDS prevention and control has achieved important results. Awareness and responsibility of all levels, sectors and the people have been raised. HIV treatment programs have been expanded. Vietnam has achieved the goal of reducing the number of people infected with HIV, reducing the number of people progressing to AIDS and reducing the number of people dying from AIDS.

However, the fight against HIV/AIDS still faces many challenges. The HIV/AIDS pandemic remains a direct threat to human health and life. The theme “Equity and equity in access to HIV/AIDS prevention and control services - Towards ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030” chosen by Vietnam in 2024 demonstrates its commitment to addressing inequalities in access to health services. This theme also reflects Vietnam’s efforts to implement international commitments and create conditions for everyone to access health services equally and without discrimination.

At the rally, delegates were given an overview of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the challenges to achieving the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Accordingly, it is estimated that there are currently about 249,000 people living with HIV in the community. Each year, Vietnam has about 10,000 new HIV infections; the rate of drug addicts treated with methanol and homosexuals treated before exposure to HIV is still low compared to the set target... These are significant challenges in the work of preventing, combating and ending the AIDS epidemic.

To end the pandemic by 2030, it requires Party committees and authorities at all levels to pay due attention to prevention and control work, especially in coordination with the health sector to carry out propaganda activities and raise public awareness; focus on expanding and diversifying types of community-based HIV testing and counseling and improving the quality of HIV/AIDS treatment; improve the capacity of medical staff at all levels, especially in remote and isolated areas; and focus on mobilizing resources for HIV/AIDS prevention and control activities.
