On the morning of April 23, the National Political Publishing House Truth in collaboration with the Academy of Journalism and Propaganda organized a discussion and exchange with the theme "The Great Victory of Spring 1975 - The Power of Will and Belief in Victory."

According to Nguyen Thai Binh, Deputy Director of the National Political Publishing House, Truth, the program contributes to arousing and spreading the spirit of patriotism, nurturing the ideals of life, the will to rise up and promote the role and responsibility of today's young generation. This is also an opportunity to introduce to readers the dedicated and valuable publications of the National Political Publishing House, Truth, about the historic victory of the nation half a century ago.

“The activities aim to promote and help readers, especially the young generation, understand more clearly and deeply about the important historical events of the country, while spreading the spirit of loving books, building a reading movement, developing a reading culture, and building a learning society,” said Mr. Nguyen Thai Binh.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor - Doctor Luu Van Quang, Deputy Director of the Academy of Journalism and Communication, said that in any era, correctly understanding, appreciating and continuing the great historical values of the nation is always a solid foundation for each individual to mature, for each generation to have a spiritual support, thereby nurturing the aspiration to rise up, contribute and serve the country.

In today's context, when the country enters a new era with many opportunities but also many challenges, the lessons from history and the heroic sacrifices of previous generations have special significance.

The seminar was attended by generals and soldiers who had gone through life and death, participated directly on the battlefield and contributed to the great victory of Spring 1975.

Sharing at the discussion, Dr. Dam Duy Thien, a former scout of Regiment 266, Division 341 Song Lam, still remembers that he was one of the youngest soldiers in the unit. He volunteered to join the army in 1972, when he was not yet 16 years old.

At that time, the young man Dam Duy Thien weighed less than 40kg, the smallest person in the unit. In return, he had bright, alert eyes and a talent for drawing, so his superiors sent him for training and then attached him to the work of drawing maps.

“At that time, wherever our army fought, we were given maps. It was very difficult to remember the terrain and place names, but even now, after more than 50 years, I still remember the Xuan Loc area clearly, from the roads, forests, rivers, and where our forces were deployed,” said Mr. Dam Duy Thien.

He added that if a soldier working on maps were unfortunately captured by the enemy, the entire unit could be wiped out, affecting the campaign. At that time, there were no tables, chairs, or tools for drawing maps. All work was mainly done in the basement.

“In map drawing, a 1mm error is equivalent to a 12km error in the field. Artillery soldiers accompany the map maker to collect data, then go to the observation post to establish coordinates. The map drawing tools are very simple, mainly relying on reconnaissance and intelligence, and require a good imagination of the drawer,” said Mr. Thien.

From the map he drew, the Command of Regiment 266 easily determined the correct direction of attack and the correct targets of the units to make timely and accurate decisions for the battle.

On this occasion, the National Political Publishing House Truth presented Dr. Dam Duy Thien and representatives of the Academy of Journalism and Communication with the book “Family, Friends and Country” signed by former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh. The organizing committee also presented the students with the book “Ho Chi Minh City: Zero Hour - reports on the end of the 30-year war” ./.
