According to Ambassador Nguyen Huy Dung, through verification with Vietnamese representative agencies in Saudi Arabia as well as through sources, the Embassy determined that among the three deceased crew members was a Vietnamese crew member, Dang Duy Kien (born in 1983, from Hai Phong), who was the deputy captain of the ship.
Mr. Kien is one of four Vietnamese crew members working on the True Confidence ship.
After the True Confidence ship was attacked in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen's Aden port on March 6, all crew members were evacuated to Djibouti by an Indian Navy ship.
Currently, 3 Vietnamese crew members are staying safely at the Laurie Hotel in the capital of Djibouti, Republic of Djibouti.
The Ambassador added that the Embassy has contacted Mr. Pham Van Thanh, the contact point for the Vietnamese crew members brought to Djibouti City. Currently, the health and spirit of the three crew members are stable.
The body of Dang Duy Kien has been taken to a hospital in Djibouti City. The Embassy will continue to verify and take further protective measures.
In addition, the Embassy has also contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti. The Djibouti side is ready to support Vietnamese sailors with some necessary documents to return to Vietnam.
The Embassy also prepared a plan to reissue passports to the three crew members as well as carry out procedures related to citizen protection and consular affairs to move Mr. Kien's body back to Vietnam according to Vietnamese law.
If necessary, the Embassy will send staff to Djibouti to directly support the crew members.
The Embassy is also trying to contact the ship owner and dispatching company to determine the specific repatriation route for the crew members to take further measures./.
