On September 13, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper met with the press to share the results of President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam as well as the prospects for the Vietnam-US relationship.
America is grateful
"It was truly moving to see General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Joe Biden meet," US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper shared at a press conference.
Throughout most of the event, the US diplomat expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations after President Joe Biden's visit.
Recalling the US leader's activities in about 24 hours in Vietnam, Ambassador Knapper said "President Biden is extremely pleased with what happened in Vietnam".
Mr. Knapper affirmed that the two countries' upgrading to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development is "a two-step leap", showing "the quality and aspiration for the bilateral relationship".
"We are very grateful and honored that the Vietnamese side considered and decided to take such an extraordinary and unprecedented upgrade," Ambassador Knapper shared.
"There was a particularly touching event when President Biden came to the National Assembly House to meet with National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue. A small ceremony of exchanging wartime memorabilia took place there, witnessed by the two leaders," Mr. Knapper recalled.
Several American and Vietnamese veterans were the main characters in that small ceremony. A time-stained diary was returned to Vietnam by an American veteran and items of American soldiers during the war were returned. Some documents to help search for missing people were also handed over at the event.
"Seeing veterans from both sides carry out this exchange in the presence of the US President and the Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly was truly touching. It also has special meaning for me personally because my father was also a soldier who held a gun here," the US ambassador expressed.
Investing in education is investing in technology
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online 's question about which areas the US will prioritize promoting among a series of commitments to Vietnam in the joint statement upgrading relations, Ambassador Knapper said the US's major goal is to support Vietnam in building an economy based on innovation.
To do that, the US will rely on high-tech cooperation, such as semiconductors, and high-tech workforce training and education, especially in STEM fields.
According to the US Ambassador, building a high-quality human resource for high-tech industries is very important, contributing to building an innovative economy.
According to the joint statement on upgrading the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States, the two countries will launch human resource development initiatives in the semiconductor sector, in which the US Government will provide an initial seed grant of $2 million, along with future support from the Vietnamese Government and the private sector.
“Investing in education is an investment in high technology. The areas of cooperation are connected to create a better and brighter future for both our countries,” Ambassador Knapper said.
