Taiwan tightens e-visa issuance for Vietnamese visitors.

VnExpressVnExpress13/09/2023

From 10:00 AM on September 14th, South Korean and Japanese visas held by Vietnamese citizens will no longer be valid for applying for a Taiwan e-visa.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City announced on the afternoon of September 13th a change regarding online visa application procedures (e-visas). Accordingly, from 10:00 AM on September 14th, Vietnamese citizens using South Korean and Japanese visas to apply for e-visas to enter Taiwan will no longer be accepted when registering through the online application system.

Visas issued before September 14th under this scheme remain valid. In addition to Vietnam, the new policy also applies to other countries in Southeast Asia.

Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hue, representative of Flamingo Redtours, suggested that Taiwan's tightening of electronic visa requirements might be aimed at preventing tourists from falsifying their visa applications with South Korean or Japanese visas and then entering Taiwan for "other purposes."

According to Ms. Hue, this new move by the Taiwanese government will affect independent travelers or individual tourists to some extent. "The Quan Hong visa is still being implemented as usual, so tourists who register for tours will not be affected," Ms. Hue said. The Quan Hong visa is an e-visa issued to groups of five or more people organized by travel companies on the list designated by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau.

For Vietnamese travelers traveling independently, from September 14th onwards, if you wish to enter Taiwan via e-visa, you must present one of the following documents: a valid residence permit or permanent residence permit/a valid visa (including an e-visa, but a printed copy is required)/a residence permit or visa that expired within the last 10 years, issued by the following countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the Schengen Area. If you have an Australian or New Zealand e-visa and wish to apply for an e-visa to Taiwan, the existing e-visa must still be valid.

Vietnamese citizens holding a visa or residence permit issued by Taiwan within the last 10 years and without any prior legal violations are also eligible to apply for an e-visa. However, this preferential treatment does not apply to those holding visas with the symbols FL (work visa), X (other visa), P (Quan Hong visa), or residence permits for workers.

If you are unable to register for the conditional visa exemption online as described above, you will need to go to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to apply for a paper visa.
