The 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival will take place in Ho Chi Minh City from May 6 to 8.

On the afternoon of April 22, the Central Communications Department of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) held a press conference to introduce the 2025 United Nations Day of Vesak taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from May 6 to 8.

Speaking at the press conference, Most Venerable Thich Gia Quang, Vice President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Head of the Central Information and Communications Department of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Head of the Information and Communications Department of the United Nations Vesak 2025, said: The main activities of the United Nations Vesak 2025 will take place at the Hall of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy, Le Minh Xuan campus, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City. This is a meaningful activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025); and the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

The 2025 United Nations Day of Vesak has the main theme “Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for World Peace and Sustainable Development”.

Sub-themes: Nurturing inner peace for world peace; Forgiveness and healing through mindfulness - The path of reconciliation; Buddhist compassion in action - Shared responsibility for human development; Mindfulness ineducation for a compassionate and sustainable future; Promoting solidarity: Collaborative efforts for global harmony.

The organizing committee received 578 papers in English and 330 papers in Vietnamese. The papers focused on the topics of peace, sustainable development, and the application of Buddhist teachings in modern society.

Attending the 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival, there are expected to be about 1,200 international delegates from 85 countries and territories and about 1,500 domestic delegates.

The United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 is an opportunity for Buddhists around the world to commemorate the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing into Nirvana; at the same time, strengthen solidarity with friends from all over the world. The festival is also an opportunity to introduce the good values ​​of Buddhism, contributing to building a world of peace, happiness and friendship.

Venerable Thich Gia Quang said that the United Nations Vesak Festival is a cultural activity of the United Nations. The 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly on December 15, 1999 decided that Vesak or the Three-Way Festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment and nirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni is a cultural and religious festival for peace. Since 2000, the United Nations Vesak Festival has been held 19 times at the United Nations headquarters and in countries around the world.

Vietnam has successfully hosted and organized 3 United Nations Vesak Festivals: 2008 with 87 countries participating at the My Dinh National Convention Center, Hanoi; 2014 with 95 countries participating at Bai Dinh Pagoda, Ninh Binh Province and 2019 with 112 countries participating at Tam Chuc Pagoda, Ha Nam Province.
