According to Al Jazeera, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly has just passed a resolution demanding that Israel end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months.
The Palestinian-drafted resolution was adopted with 124 votes in favor, 43 abstentions and 14 against, including Israel and the United States. The resolution also welcomed the International Court of Justice (ICC) advisory opinion in July, which declared that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements is illegal and must end.
This is the first resolution officially submitted by the Palestinian Authority at the UN since it won a UN member seat at General Assembly meetings and the right to propose draft resolutions.
The UN General Assembly also called on states to take steps to “halt the import of goods originating from Jewish settlements, as well as the supply or transfer to Israel of arms, ammunition and related equipment, due to concerns that they may be used in the occupied Palestinian territory.”
The UN General Assembly resolution and the ICJ ruling are both non-binding, but the resolution is a political victory for Palestine as world leaders gather at the UN headquarters in New York next week for the UN High-Level Week, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are expected to address the session.
