National Economics University opens engineering program.

VnExpressVnExpress10/01/2024

In 2024, the National Economics University (NEU) plans to open many new majors, including both bachelor's and engineering programs, which are strengths of technical universities.

According to an announcement on the evening of January 10th from the National Economics University, six new majors have been introduced: Data Science (in the field of Mathematics and Statistics), Software Engineering, Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Information Security (in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology), and Labor Relations (in the field of Business and Management).

Specifically, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are expected to enroll 100 students each, while the remaining majors will have 50. Except for Labor Relations, which offers a bachelor's degree, the other five majors will offer both bachelor's and engineering degrees.

A typical bachelor's degree program lasts 3-4 years, while an engineering degree is longer, about 6 months to a year. Generally, engineering degrees are only offered in technical fields with a strong emphasis on practical skills. Historically, only technical universities like the University of Transport, the University of Technology, and the University of Civil Engineering offered this program, while universities specializing in business and management, like NEU, primarily offered bachelor's degree programs.

The National Economics University plans to become a university by 2025. The university stated that opening new majors plays an important role in diversifying and expanding training programs; meeting social needs and enhancing its position in the context of international integration.

NEU currently has approximately 25,000 full-time students and over 1,200 staff and lecturers. It offers 60 undergraduate programs and 28 doctoral programs. In its development strategy for the 2021-2030 period, the university aims to be among the top 5 universities in Vietnam.

According to the 2018 Higher Education Law, universities and colleges are two different concepts. Universities and academies train and research in many disciplines, which belong to one or several fields. Meanwhile, universities train and research in multiple fields, comprising many member universities and faculties.

To be converted into a university, institutions need to meet three conditions: be legally accredited and assessed as meeting quality standards; have at least three schools and 10 doctoral programs, with a full-time student body of over 15,000; and be approved by the direct management agency and investors.

At the end of December, the National Economics University announced its 2024 admissions plan. The projected enrollment is 6,200 (excluding 6 upcoming majors). Of this total, 2% will be admitted directly, 18% will be based on 2024 high school graduation exam scores, and the remaining 80% will be admitted through a combined admissions process under its own scheme, excluding admission based on academic transcripts.

In 2023, the admission cutoff scores for NEU based on high school graduation exam results ranged from 8.5 to 9 points per subject, with tuition fees of approximately 16-22 million VND for the standard program.
