How to convert Polytechnic?
Sharing with VietNamNet, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang, Head of Training Department (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) said that the school mainly considers admission based on a combination of many different assessment sources, converting scores to record the entire learning and training process of students. On the other hand, this is also to balance these assessment sources. After many years of monitoring students' learning results, the school currently "temporarily believes" in its admission plan and will continue to monitor for appropriate adjustments.
According to Mr. Thang, in 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology will use a comprehensive method to consider 95-99% of the total target.
The minimum score for receiving applications is 50 (on a scale of 100). The conversion formula is as follows:
Admission score = Academic score + Priority score (100-point scale)
Academic scores are calculated on a 100-point scale, rounded to 0.01 for each component and rounded to 0.01 for the total score.
Academic score = Ability score × 70% + Converted high school graduation score × 20% + Converted high school study score × 10%
Subject 1: Candidates with the results of the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam.
Competency score = Competency assessment score with Math coefficient × 2 /15 (1,500-point scale converted to 100-point scale).
Converted high school graduation score = Total score of 3 high school graduation exam subjects in the combination /3 × 10.
Converted high school grades = Average of grade 10, 11, 12 grades of subjects in the group × 10.
In case a candidate in grade 10 lacks 1 subject in the admission combination, and changes subjects from grade 11, the candidate will only have 8 score columns compared to a normal candidate (with 9 score columns).

Subject 2: Candidates do not have the results of the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City National University Competency Assessment Exam.
Competency score = Converted high school graduation score × 0.75.
Converted high school graduation score = Total score of 3 high school graduation exam subjects in the group / 3 × 10.
Subject 3: Candidates graduating from foreign high schools
Competency score = Converted high school score.
High school graduation scores converted for candidates from countries with graduation exams, convert candidates' exam scores to a 100-point scale.
Candidates from countries without high school graduation exams: Converted high school graduation score = Converted high school study score.
Converted high school grades = Average of grade 10, 11, 12 grades of subjects in the group, converted to a 100-point scale.
The year of the candidate's high school graduation exam must not be more than 2 years from the year of application. In case the candidate lacks subjects in the admission combination, the candidate will have fewer score columns than a normal candidate (with 9 score columns).
Subject 4: Candidates using international admission certificates
Competency score = International admission certificate score.
Converted high school graduation score = Total score of 3 high school graduation exam subjects in the group / 3 × 10.
Converted high school grades = Average of grade 10, 11, 12 grades of subjects in the group × 10. International admission certificate scores are announced by the school on the website.
Subject 5: Candidates entering the Australia/USA/New Zealand International Transfer Program.
Ability score = Interview score × 0.5 + Essay score × 0.3 + Converted English certificate score × 0.2.
Converted high school graduation score = Total score of 3 high school graduation exam subjects in the group / 3 × 10.
Converted high school grades = average of grade 10, 11, 12 grades of subjects in the group × 10.
The essence of admissions is to select the right person for the right student.
Regarding the conversion of scores by the Ministry of Education and Training, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Thang said that it is necessary to determine the core input content when training a major. For example, engineering majors require learners to be ready in mathematics and natural sciences (specific majors may have more specific requirements).
When using a certain admission method, it is necessary to determine the correlation with the above core content. When there is more than one method, it is necessary to clarify the basis for selecting or not selecting a successful candidate.
For example, there are 2 candidates, candidate A has an outstanding score in method X and candidate B has an outstanding score in method Y. Suppose only one candidate can be selected to be admitted, which candidate will be selected and why?
"The essence of admission is here, to help schools select the right students and ensure fairness for all candidates," said Mr. Thang.
According to Mr. Thang, currently all schools recruit students based on scores (possibly with preliminary selection and additional conditions), so converting admission scores is necessary. However, this is not a simple problem and there may still be additional methods such as grading by the evaluation board, interview grading... but it is difficult to deploy on a large scale and still needs to be closely monitored.
