On the evening of August 16, the Culture - Social Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety, in coordination with relevant departments and branches, conducted a survey on food safety management at Ho Thi Ky food street (District 10).

Reporting to the survey team, a representative of Ward 1 People's Committee, District 10 said that Ho Thi Ky food street was recognized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism as one of the "10 interesting shopping spots" but is facing limitations and difficulties.

Lack of parking and toilets

Specifically, along the long stretch of the food street with about 176 stalls, there are no restrooms to serve the people and diners. In addition, the food street is also lacking parking lots because the current parking lots are spontaneously built from private homes and are very small, while the demand for parking for diners is very high.

"The lack of toilets, parking lots... limits the business activities of many restaurants and makes it difficult to retain customers in the long run."

At the meeting, Mr. Hoang Quoc Tam - Chairman of Ward 1 People's Committee - made recommendations to District 10 People's Committee and the survey team about using the yards of schools next to the culinary street as parking lots; allocating capital to build toilets, or utilizing toilets of business households to make public toilets...

In addition, the representative of Ward 1 People's Committee also proposed to build an additional public fire station and asked for a corner of Ho Thi Ky Primary School to make a water reservoir for this fire station.

From a management perspective, Mr. Bui The Hai - Vice Chairman of District 10 People's Committee - said that Ho Thi Ky food street has more than 130 businesses, most of which sell grilled dishes, seafood, etc. The main source of goods is from Binh Dien wholesale market and food suppliers with clear origins.

From there, the authorities will check the invoice when the seller imports the goods. The seller must sign a commitment on food safety.

Food monitoring at the source

Commenting that parking lots and toilets are essential for the food street, Mr. Nguyen Minh Nhut - Deputy Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Committee of the City People's Council - said that with the limited public land fund, the locality needs to quickly promote the socialization of the construction of toilets and parking lots. In addition, it is necessary to organize more cultural programs on weekends to attract customers.

Through the survey, Mr. Cao Thanh Binh - Head of the Culture - Social Committee of the City People's Council - assessed that basically, the food stalls at Ho Thi Ky food street have complied with food hygiene and safety, origin of goods...

However, Mr. Binh noted that businesses need to continue to better comply with ensuring food safety. In addition, with more than 80% of food supplies imported by sellers from wholesale markets, coordination to control quality and food safety at wholesale markets and at the source is extremely important, in addition to building a business environment and infrastructure.

"From the local proposal, the delegation will submit recommendations to the departments and report to the City People's Committee on issues such as building toilets, parking lots and arranging trash cans for the food street," Mr. Binh affirmed.

At the meeting, the representative of District 10 People's Committee said that the city needs to allocate human resources for food safety management in accordance with the reality of each locality, because the health sector is overloaded; continue to authorize and decentralize to the district the appraisal and issuance of certificates of qualified food safety facilities to facilitate the people.
