Along with 56 cities around the world, on June 28, Da Nang officially joined the global initiative “Safe Cities, free from violence against women and children” launched by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in 2011.
The initiative aims to support countries and local governments in addressing a range of sustainable development goals, including those related to women and children. In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City was the first city to join the initiative in 2017.
In recent times, Da Nang has made many efforts in preventing and responding to violence against women and children. Notably, the city has issued Directive No. 39-CT/TU dated April 24, 2020 of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee on building a safe city - free of violence against women and children, Decision No. 1006/QD-UBND dated March 29, 2021 of the Chairman of the City People's Committee on promulgating the Project "Building a safe Da Nang city - free of violence against women and children, period 2021 - 2025, vision to 2035".
Participating in the UN Women Global Mainstream Initiative “Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces” will help Da Nang city access knowledge, technical support, and learn practical experiences through connecting with the network of cities participating in the Initiative in 31 countries.

At the same time, Da Nang will conduct research, collect data and evidence on forms of violence against women and children in public places, thereby developing appropriate policies; invest in developing safe and friendly public spaces and raise awareness through communication to contribute to bringing practical benefits to the city's residents.
The Da Nang City Women's Union will be the focal point, presiding over and coordinating with relevant sectors to closely cooperate with UN Women in the process of implementing activities within the framework of the Global Core Initiative "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces for Women and Girls".
Speaking at the event, Ms. Caroline Nyamayemombe, Head of UN Women Vietnam affirmed: “Da Nang’s participation marks the relentless efforts of the city government over the years and is also the beginning of areas that need improvement to achieve gender equality and sustainable development in the city as soon as possible. UN Women is committed to continuing to support Da Nang and encourage other cities in Vietnam to join this journey.”
Also at this event, UN Women launched the 30 Bus 2030 campaign, including 30 bus trips to cities in Vietnam to recognize achievements in gender equality in Vietnam, towards the 30th anniversary of the implementation of the Beijing Platform and Declaration for Action, one of the most comprehensive documents on women's rights adopted at the 1995 International Conference on Women held in Beijing, China.
From now until 2025, UN Women and countries around the world including Vietnam will organize many commemorative activities, including comprehensive national reports on the implementation of the Beijing Platform and Declaration for Action. The first bus of the campaign departed from Da Nang city with the coordination of the Da Nang Women's Union.
