Da Nang: Creative industries should develop around sea tourism

According to Associate Professor Tran Ngoc Ca (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Da Nang needs to focus on the creative industry – a core component of innovation – and adopt a cluster-based development approach centered around beach tourism .

On November 15th, the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology (DST) organized a workshop to synthesize feedback from stakeholders, finalize the content of the "Da Nang - City of Innovation" project, and develop a specific action plan for the 2026-2030 period.

A workshop was held on November 15th to gather feedback on the project " Da Nang - City of Innovation and Creativity".

Based on feedback received, Associate Professor Tran Ngoc Ca (School of Management and Business (HSB), Vietnam National University, Hanoi) emphasized that Da Nang needs to focus on the creative industry – a core component of innovation. And the city's innovation initiative serves as a support system, creating a foundation for the development of the creative industry.

According to him, focusing on creative industries will create economic development based on higher added value and more competitive advantages, instead of focusing solely on industrial production, which tends towards outsourcing, has low added value, and is easily susceptible to the low-income trap.

“Barcelona (Spain), Copenhagen (Denmark), San Diego (USA), Tel Aviv (Israel), Busan (South Korea), Cebu (Philippines), Phuket (Thailand) are some of the world's model examples suitable for Da Nang, and they share some common characteristics: a connection to the sea; an ideal living and working environment; and diverse types and combinations of innovation,” said Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Ca.

According to him, Da Nang's creative industry model needs to be closely linked to tourism development; practically serving to promote other strengths of the city such as the marine economy, port/logistics, and transportation hub… At the same time, it should make Da Nang an ideal living and working space for scientists, technologists, local investors, and those from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and abroad.

He suggested that Da Nang needs better cooperation and linkages with other innovation clusters in the country such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; linking with provinces and cities in the region, making Hue and Hoi An components of Da Nang's ecosystem, not competing with each other but relying on each other.

Simultaneously, the city will establish links with several innovation centers abroad (Singapore, Japan, South Korea, the US, etc.) by setting up overseas facilities in Da Nang; selecting strategic partners, similar to Hanoi's choice of French partners and Ho Chi Minh City's choice of San Francisco partners, will focus on expert exchange, sharing of technical infrastructure, and synergistic effects.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Ca, Da Nang needs to position itself as a center for several clusters of creative industries, finding or creating specific niches for development. He suggested that Da Nang's creative industry should approach development in clusters centered around beach tourism. Simultaneously, it should target the $172 billion BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) market; film studio services; providing software services and solutions for supply chains and logistics; tropical coastal architecture; and Central Vietnamese cuisine…

According to Le Thi Thuc, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology, the contributions from the seminars and workshops continuously held in the past period are strategic preparations to ensure that the project is highly applicable, suitable to the needs and development potential of Da Nang; opening up opportunities for comprehensive cooperation and connection, aiming to develop the city into a sustainable innovation center and reach international standards.
