On April 17, the Ministry of Health provided information on the measles epidemic situation nationwide.

Accordingly, during the week (from April 5 to April 11), the whole country recorded 4,519 suspected cases of measles, down 6.3% compared to the previous week. However, since the beginning of 2025, the whole country has recorded 67,904 suspected cases of measles, of which 7,235 were positive.

The number of cases tends to increase from February 2025 and level off in late March and decrease in mid-April 2025.

Regarding the measles epidemic, some provinces and cities have recorded a decrease in the number of cases such as Nghe An, Hue city, Hanoi , Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh city, Dong Thap. On the contrary, some places such as Gia Lai, Lai Chau, Lao Cai have seen an increase in the number of cases, mainly among ethnic minorities. Worryingly, there have been 8 deaths related to measles recorded.

Compared to the first 3 months of 2025, the age structure of the disease has changed, in which the 1-10 year old group has decreased, while the groups under 1 year old and over 10 years old have increased. Analysis of the vaccination status shows that the measles incidence rate is highest in the unvaccinated group (accounting for 82.8%).

Regarding the measles vaccination campaign, according to the Ministry of Health , the first phase of the campaign vaccinated 95.5% of subjects. The second phase of the campaign (as of April 7, 2025) vaccinated 96% of subjects.

Although the epidemic situation has shown signs of easing, the health sector still recognizes that there are many challenges.

The reason is that some localities have not achieved high vaccination rates (≥95%) due to difficulties in reaching the subjects, especially in remote areas and large urban areas. In addition, awareness of a part of the population is still limited, leading to a fear of vaccination. On the other hand, the number of grassroots health workers is still low, causing difficulties for implementation.

In light of this, the Ministry of Health noted that the Departments of Health of provinces and cities should strengthen communication about the epidemic situation and recommend disease prevention measures. The Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the Pasteur Institute should continue to closely monitor the situation and research disease prevention and control measures. Medical facilities should also do a good job of triaging, admitting, treating patients and controlling infections.
