According to the indictment, Mr. Hernández was involved in drug trafficking routes from Central America to the United States and owned many heavy weapons. In addition, the 55-year-old former politician also received millions of dollars from drug trafficking organizations in many places, including the former boss of major Mexican drug cartels, and used these illegal funds to finance his political campaigns. In return, Mr. Hernández and other Honduran officials protected drug traffickers in Honduras, giving them access to law enforcement and military information and avoiding extradition to the United States.

Just three months after his term as President (2014-2022) ended, Mr. Hernández was arrested in Honduras and extradited to the United States for trial in late April 2022. Mr. Hernández was an important partner of the United States under former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump in anti-migration and anti-drug campaigns.

Mr. Hernández's younger brother, former Honduran congressman Tony Hernández, was also sentenced to life in prison in the United States in March 2021.
