Former President Carter has been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, since February 2023. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died in November 2023 after 77 years of marriage. The former president attended his late wife's memorial service in a wheelchair.
According to his nephew Jason Carter, former President Carter told a family member that he was "just trying to vote for Kamala Harris."
“He was absolutely following the campaign,” Jason Carter told CBS News reporter Mark Strassmann in September.
"And you know, when we asked him, are you excited about your 100th birthday, he said, I'm excited about that but I'm really excited to vote for Kamala Harris. And so, he's still involved, he's still paying attention and he has his views," the nephew said.
The former president spent a significant amount of time in hospice care at home, compared to the average time spent in hospice care for 63 days, according to the National Institutes of Health. Carter spent more than 19 months in hospice care.
