Thaksin's lawyer Winyat Chartmontri told Reuters on August 30 that the former prime minister was preparing to ask for a royal pardon, according to Reuters.
"Mr. Thaksin is proceeding on his own and is currently in the process of preparing documents and drafting a request," said lawyer Winyat. Mr. Winyat stressed that the timing of submitting the amnesty request will be decided by Mr. Thaksin.
Anti-Thaksin groups have petitioned Thailand's correctional services to block any pardon attempts, arguing that corruption cases should not receive leniency, Reuters reported.

Earlier, Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Mr. Thaksin's daughter, said on August 29 that any move to seek a royal pardon for Mr. Thaksin would be "entirely up to him" and the process would take time, according to Reuters.
That was the first comment made by Ms. Paetongtarn since Mr. Thaksin returned to Thailand on August 22 after 15 years of exile. The former Thai Prime Minister is serving an eight-year prison sentence, related to three cases in which he was convicted in absentia.
Mr Thaksin, 74, was transferred from prison to Bangkok Police General Hospital last week, just hours after his first night in jail, suffering from chest pain and high blood pressure.

Regarding Mr. Thaksin's health, Ms. Paetongtarn said he will stay at the current hospital and not move to a private treatment facility, but she is worried about his heart disease, according to the Bangkok Post .
Ms. Paetongtarn visited Mr. Thaksin in hospital on August 29. Later, at Pheu Thai party headquarters, she told reporters that her father was still tired and exhausted but was still able to talk.
