Saving the lives of many cardiac arrest patients thanks to modern technology

Many cardiovascular patients have been saved thanks to modern and effective heart treatment techniques at Hospital 19-8.

Dr. Duong Hong Nien, Head of the Cardiology Department, 19-8 Hospital, said that according to the general trend, the rate of people with cardiovascular diseases coming to 19-8 Hospital for examination and treatment is increasing; in particular, the number of young patients with cardiovascular diseases has increased compared to before.

Many cardiovascular patients have been saved thanks to modern and effective heart treatment techniques at Hospital 19-8.

Every day, the clinic receives 200-300 patients with various diseases, mainly hypertension, acute and chronic coronary syndrome, acute myocardial infarction...

“We often have to treat patients with myocardial infarction at night and many people are saved. The department has 50 beds but is always full of patients,” said Dr. Nien.

Hospitalized with chest pain, Mr. Nguyen Dang Khang (61 years old, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi) was taken to the emergency room at Hospital 19-8.

He was transferred to the Department of Cardiology and diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. That same night, the doctor ordered coronary stent placement to save the patient's life.

Admitted to the emergency room in a state of cardiac arrest, Mr. Pham Van Vu (50 years old) was diagnosed with a heart attack. Doctors immediately turned on the red alert, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and placed 2 stents. After 5 days of treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital and continued to follow-up as scheduled.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen, Director of Hospital 19-8, the hospital's Cardiology Department has now performed advanced techniques in the field, thereby saving the lives of many critically ill patients.

The hospital has updated the leading advanced techniques from major cardiovascular centers in Vietnam and the world such as RS ablation to treat arrhythmias, 3D mapping to treat complex arrhythmias with high accuracy...

In 2024, the Hospital implemented the technique of placing acute aortic stent grafts, a modern intervention method that effectively treats aortic aneurysms, a very dangerous disease. Thanks to the implementation of these advanced techniques, many cases of cardiac arrest have been saved.

Most recently, doctors saved the life of a foreign patient studying in Vietnam. “When arriving at the hospital, the patient’s heart rate was only 40-50 beats/minute (normal for a person is 80 beats/minute), and he was almost unconscious.

After cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the patient was taken to the intervention room. Doctors investigated the cause and determined that the patient had a conduction disorder, and immediately placed a pacemaker. After the intervention, the patient's health improved very well. The patient has now been discharged from the hospital and returned to normal life.

MSc. Dr. Phan Dinh Nghia, Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiology, Hospital 19-8, shared that the reasons why many young people suffer from this disease are due to smoking, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet, overweight - obesity, stress, prolonged stress...

However, there are also cases of young people without underlying medical conditions, but still have myocardial infarction, such as the case of a 24-year-old male patient (Ha Giang).

The patient's family has no history of cardiovascular disease, the patient has no underlying medical conditions but has typical left chest pain.

The images showed complete occlusion of the anterior artery branch. The patient was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction, at risk of cardiac arrest. Fortunately, after medical intervention, the patient was saved.

According to Nghia, many young people have high blood pressure but do not know it, and go to the doctor when they feel tired and have a persistent headache. There are very young people who go to the emergency room with a blood pressure index of 170mm/Hg-180mm/Hg, and previously subjectively thought that their body was tired so they did not go to the doctor.

High blood pressure in young people is often caused by a number of diseases: adrenal gland tumors, renal artery stenosis, glomerulonephritis, thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or the use of certain cortisol drugs.

These are the causes of high blood pressure in young people. If the cause is found and treated, blood pressure will return to normal and no blood pressure medication will be required. However, if there is no cause for high blood pressure, blood pressure medication must be taken for life.

Doctors recommend that people have regular health check-ups. When experiencing chest pain or unusual headaches, they should go to a medical facility for consultation and treatment.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world, as well as in Vietnam; accounting for about 17.9 million deaths each year, equivalent to 32% of total deaths in the world.

According to the World Health Organization in 2019, deaths due to cardiovascular diseases accounted for 39.5%, with cerebrovascular diseases (55.4%) and coronary artery disease (32%) leading. These diseases cause burdens on health, quality of life and treatment costs for patients as well as caregivers.

In Vietnam, the trend of death from cardiovascular disease is increasing, death from cardiovascular disease is more than death from cancer, COPD and diabetes combined.

In our country, every year about 200,000 people die from cardiovascular diseases, accounting for 33% of all deaths. Of these, deaths from cerebrovascular diseases account for the largest proportion, with the mortality rate increasing from 127.3/100,000 people (in 2000) to 164.9/100,000 people today.

Besides cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease is a non-communicable disease often caused by diabetes and hypertension and is a serious public health problem.

Deaths due to chronic kidney disease accounted for 4.6% of deaths globally and were the 12th leading cause of death in 2017. In Vietnam, there are more than >8.7 million adults with chronic kidney disease, accounting for 12.8% of the population.

Vietnam currently has more than 400 hemodialysis units and provides dialysis services to about 30,000 patients with end-stage renal disease each year, but only meets 30% of the needs of patients requiring dialysis nationwide.

According to the Vietnam Health Insurance report in 2022, the cost of payment for hemodialysis is currently at the top of the payment list, estimated at more than 4,000 billion.

Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of chronic kidney disease, as well as slowing down the process of kidney function decline, renal replacement therapy will bring significant and long-term economic benefits while reducing the burden on the health sector.

However, the rate of missed diagnosis of chronic kidney disease is still very high, especially in the early stages due to atypical symptoms of the disease, only about 4.5-15.5% of patients with stage 3 chronic kidney disease are diagnosed, in which, the rate of missed diagnosis in some subjects at high risk of chronic kidney disease such as hypertension and diabetes is still high, respectively 68.4% and 51.7% (10).
