Doctors from the Cardiology Department of Thanh Hoa General Hospital have successfully implanted an ICD, saving the life of a 68-year-old male patient with severe heart failure. This is the optimal method to help patients escape the risk of sudden death caused by dangerous arrhythmias.
The patient's health was stable after implantation of an ICD.
Previously, patient MXD, in Nga Tan commune (Nga Son), was taken by his family to Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital in a state of chest tightness, dizziness, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, severe fatigue, a history of heart failure, and had 3 coronary artery stents placed since 2020.
Through examination and tests, echocardiography, electrocardiogram, and 24-hour electrocardiogram monitoring, the results showed that the patient had severe heart failure (grade 3), severely reduced left ventricular contractility, left ventricular ejection fraction EF of 24%, and persistent ventricular tachycardia. Doctors determined that this was a dangerous arrhythmia that could progress to death due to cardiac arrest at any time. The patient was given antiarrhythmic drugs and actively treated for heart failure. During the treatment according to the regimen, the patient experienced many arrhythmias and had to be shocked 5 times. After a few days of treatment, the patient's clinical condition improved and the heart rate stabilized. However, 1 day later, the patient experienced persistent ventricular tachycardia again.
To prevent future arrhythmias that could cause sudden death, the doctors at the Department of Cardiology have prescribed an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for the patient. This is an effective and safe method in modern medicine to help prevent sudden death caused by dangerous arrhythmias.
MXD patient is checked for surgical wound in preparation for discharge.
The surgery was performed within 1.5 hours. After implanting an ICD combined with medical treatment, patient D.'s health is now stable, without chest pain, difficulty breathing, stable hemodynamics and has been discharged from the hospital.
It is known that with the investment in modern equipment and training of high-quality human resources, the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Thanh Hoa General Hospital has performed many specialized techniques in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Cardiovascular Intervention, arrhythmia treatment and heart and vascular surgery... Thereby improving the efficiency of medical examination and treatment at the hospital, helping people enjoy high-tech services right in the locality, contributing to saving costs and reducing the burden on upper-level hospitals.
