The patient is Mr. NML (Cam Pha City) with a history of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and coronary intervention. During a routine examination, doctors discovered that he had bilateral aortic iliac aneurysms, with atherosclerotic and scattered calcifications, of which the right aneurysm had a diameter of up to 3.4 cm. Doctors diagnosed the patient with an aortic iliac aneurysm, with a high risk of aneurysm rupture.
Interventional team placed stent graft for patient.
Given the patient’s advanced age and many underlying diseases, the doctors consulted and decided to use stent grafting instead of the traditional open surgery. This is a minimally invasive intervention technique, using a specialized membrane-covered stent to reinforce the damaged vessel segment, helping the patient avoid complicated major surgery.
Aortic aneurysm is a condition in which the artery is abnormally dilated, the vessel wall is weakened and at risk of rupture at any time, especially in the elderly, with underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis. When the aneurysm ruptures, the patient may go into hemorrhagic shock, sudden death if not treated promptly, the mortality rate is very high. |
With the professional support of doctors at the Central level, the intervention team of the Provincial General Hospital led by Dr. Tran Quang Dinh (Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Intervention), Dr. Nguyen Khac Linh (Head of the Department of Internal Medicine B) and cardiologists coordinated to perform stent graft intervention for the patient. With the support of a modern two-plane digital subtraction angiography (DSA) system, after 1.5 hours of urgent and precise work, the doctors successfully inserted the stent graft into the aneurysm, firmly reinforcing the weak vessel wall, preventing the risk of aneurysm rupture and ensuring stable circulation.
Immediately after the intervention, the patient no longer had abdominal pain, was alert, ate and moved gently. Currently, his health is stable and continues to be monitored at the hospital.
According to Dr. Tran Quang Dinh, the patient is elderly and has many underlying diseases, so if open surgery is applied, there will be many potential risks and a longer recovery time. Intervention using stent graft technique is the optimal choice, helping to reduce pain, limit complications, shorten the treatment process, and at the same time clearly demonstrate the progress of modern medicine in treating dangerous vascular diseases.
In recent times, the Provincial General Hospital has mastered many specialized cardiovascular techniques, including stent graft placement, contributing to the effective treatment of emergency cases locally, reducing the load on the central level.
