According to Dr. Pham Thanh Thinh, Deputy Head of the General Surgery Department at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital, the patient was stabbed three times in the chest and sternum with a sharp object, resulting in a severed cartilage of ribs 5 and 6, one heart wound, and two liver wounds on the left side.
The patient was immediately taken to emergency surgery. During the operation, the surgical team performed drainage of the left pleural cavity - a thoracotomy revealed a penetrating wound through the pericardium causing a perforation of the right atrium, approximately 4cm in size, along with about 300ml of clotted blood.
The doctors proceeded to remove the blood clot from the pericardium, suture the wound in the right atrium to control bleeding, preserve as many branches of the right coronary artery as possible, irrigate the area, insert a pericardial drain, suture the costal cartilage and sternum, and suture the wound in the chest wall.
Additionally, examination of the left liver revealed two wounds, approximately 7cm and 5cm in size, penetrating from the top to the underside of segments II, III, and IV, and into the upper border of the pancreatic body, measuring approximately 0.5cm.
The surgical team proceeded to suture the liver wounds to control bleeding, suture the upper border of the pancreas, repair the diaphragm, irrigate the abdominal cavity, place an abdominal drain, and close the incisions anatomically. During and after the surgery, the patient received 8 units of blood transfusion.
Currently, two days after surgery, the patient is gradually stabilizing, is alert, able to eat and drink, and is continuing intensive treatment and close monitoring of their overall condition at the hospital.
