Under the new policy, Kirby will be appointed as White House adviser on national security communications and will have his own team of subordinates who will oversee the exchange of information between different US departments. They will act separately from the National Security Council.
In addition, Mr. Kirby was promoted from Deputy Assistant to Assistant to the President of the United States. Despite his new position, he will continue to chair regular press briefings at the White House.
John Kirby, who has served as Pentagon press secretary since January 2021, was appointed as coordinator for strategic communications at the National Security Council in May 2022.
He is a former US Navy Rear Admiral, highly regarded for his ability to resolve difficult foreign policy questions. He served as the top spokesman at the Pentagon and the US State Department under the administration of President Barack Obama.
