On July 14, Quang Tri General Hospital announced that it had successfully removed a Laotian patient’s right kidney, which was infected with pus and had lost its function. The patient is currently in stable health and can sit up on his own.
Previously, on July 2, Ms. Ho Thi Mom (40 years old, residing in Sepon district, Savannakhet province, Laos) was admitted to Quang Tri General Hospital with intermittent abdominal pain in the right hip area.
Mom said she had a stomachache 10 years ago but didn't have money to see a doctor. In the past 3 years, her condition has gotten worse and her stomach has gotten bigger.
Doctor Phan Khanh Viet - head of the general surgery department (Quang Tri General Hospital) - said that when the patient was admitted to the hospital, his abdomen was large on the right side, the size of an 8-month pregnant woman.

Doctors discovered that the patient had grade 4 hydronephrosis due to ureteral stones accompanied by symptoms of infection, so they diagnosed the right kidney with grade 4 pyonephrosis and loss of function. The doctor performed laparoscopic surgery, removed the pyonephrosis and loss of function of the right kidney, and at the same time aspirated out about 4.5 liters of pus.
Doctor Viet said this was a special case due to the kidney being too large, with a lot of inflammation and adhesions, and the altered anatomy, making it difficult to find and analyze the renal hilum. The hospital applied modern techniques to successfully treat the case.
