Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/05/2023

According to information from the Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City on May 14th, the hospital recently admitted and treated a rare and dangerous case of severe allergy.

According to the family's medical history, two days after eating crab, the boy developed a rash all over his body, his conjunctiva was red, and his lips were slightly swollen. Local antihistamines did not help, and his condition worsened.

The very next day, the baby's lips and oral mucosa began to blister all over her mouth. The following day, ulcers appeared in her nasal cavity and genitals. The doctor diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and immediately transferred her to the City Children's Hospital. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a severe hypersensitivity skin reaction characterized by ulcerations in natural orifices such as the eyes, nose, mouth, throat, and urinary tract.

At the City Children's Hospital, the child developed ulcerative lesions in natural orifices such as the lips, nose, earlobes, genitals, armpits, and groin. The child experienced difficulty breathing and had skin infections and systemic sepsis, requiring mechanical ventilation, antibiotics, intravenous immunoglobulin, and sterile care for the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, and genitals.

The baby has a rash of itchy bumps all over her body, preventing her from sleeping; she has conjunctivitis causing reduced vision, with a membrane covering her eyes that prevents her from opening them. Swelling and ulcers on her lips and mouth prevent her from eating and drinking, requiring six regular feedings of porridge and milk daily through a nasogastric tube. Nasal ulcers cause breathing difficulties due to dried, hardened fluid. Her lips and eyes are stuck together, making hygiene difficult.

Baby T. is gradually recovering after a period of treatment.

Despite numerous difficulties, thanks to timely consultations from the Ophthalmology, Urology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Rehabilitation teams, the doctors and nurses of the Intensive Care and Toxicology Unit gradually controlled the infection, restored the dry skin, skillfully grafted new skin, and significantly improved the baby's five senses.

Today, the baby can breathe fresh air freely, the nasal discharge has decreased, and the baby can feed himself porridge.
