On November 23, Mr. Huynh Van Khai, Director of SOS Phu Quoc Multi-Specialty Clinic ( Kien Giang ), said that doctors at the clinic had just treated a 2-year-old boy who was bitten by a red-tailed pit viper.
At approximately 8:30 PM on November 22nd, a 2-year-old boy named NTD (residing in Ham Ninh commune, Phu Quoc city) was brought to the SOS Clinic by his parents in a state of severe pain and swelling at a bite wound on his right foot.
Baby D.'s right foot was swollen due to a bite from a red-tailed pit viper.
According to family members, at around 7:30 PM that day, they noticed the child was in pain in her leg and had a wound suspected to be a snake bite, so they quickly took her to the clinic for examination.
After examining and identifying the bite, the medical team concluded that the child had been bitten by a red-tailed pit viper. Immediately afterward, the doctors administered antivenom to the child. Following the injection, the patient remained at the clinic for monitoring until after 11 PM that same day, when the patient's health stabilized, before being allowed to go home.
On the morning of November 23rd, the family brought baby D. back to the clinic for a follow-up check-up. After testing, the baby's health was stable, so she was allowed to go home for continued care.
Representatives from the SOS Phu Quoc Clinic stated that recently, quite a number of people bitten by the red-tailed pit viper have come to the clinic for emergency antivenom injections.
Explaining the recent surge in cases of red-tailed pit viper bites, many locals say that this year's rainy weather in Phu Quoc, combined with the humid environment, creates favorable conditions for red-tailed pit vipers to breed.
