The pressure to switch to green logistics is huge.

The race for green transformation in the Vietnamese transportation and logistics market is increasingly exciting as foreign enterprises are investing heavily, while domestic enterprises are still worried about struggling with this trend.

Many of the world's largest logistics corporations have taken the lead in implementing a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and convert to green energy earlier than the roadmap of committed countries.

The question is to find specific solutions for green logistics, including the use of renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, applying green production models, and green logistics.

At the green logistics workshop - improving the competitiveness of import-export enterprises in the Mekong Delta organized by the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City, the Vietnam - Asia Net Zero Science and Cooperation Center (VANZA) and JGL Vietnam recently, Mr. Do Xuan Quang - Deputy General Director of Vietjet, talked about green logistics as a whole chain, no matter how difficult it is, it is still necessary to do it because this is a trend.

In particular, it is necessary to focus on managing green supply chains and closely linking them with managing green transport links, green warehouses, managing green logistics data, minimizing transportation and delivery time...

Mr. Quang even pointed out that it is necessary to apply reverse logistics to increase the reuse of products, packaging, materials; remanufacture and refurbishment...

When those links are all "green", businesses will be able to improve production and operational capacity, while forming a green, sustainable ecosystem around the business.

Meanwhile, foreign enterprises are racing to transform green logistics in Vietnam. In June 2024, shipping line Maersk requested to import 12 heavy and light electric trucks, which can be expanded to more than 100 vehicles by 2030, along with a system of synchronous charging stations installed in Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City to focus on first- and middle-mile transport groups for Maersk's key customers.

Although the investment cost in the pilot phase is only about 3 million USD, this is a long-term, strategic step for Maersk. Maersk's goal is to approach large customers, especially foreign-invested enterprises in Vietnam, who are very concerned about reducing emissions.

Korean and Singaporean experts and businesses are interested in converting to environmentally friendly transportation methods in Vietnam.

Mr. Sang Hoon Lee, president of the Korea Energy Agency (KEA), recommended switching to electric and hybrid vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and green logistics as key factors in building a sustainable supply chain.

Green logistics enhances export capacity

Mr. Ha Vu Son, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City, said that the cost of logistics activities of enterprises in the Mekong Delta accounts for about 16.8%, contributing 5-6% of GDP. Correctly recognizing the role of green logistics will have great significance in the process of improving the capacity of export goods.

According to Mr. Son, the total export turnover of the Mekong Delta is 68 billion USD, in which Can Tho ranks first in export turnover. Every year, Can Tho exports 2.2 billion USD, of which 30% is revenue from rice exports.

In the near future, Can Tho will expand the airport into an international airport with 10-15 million passengers/year and more than 10 million tons of cargo/year. If green logistics solutions are applied, it will contribute to maximizing and effectively developing the economy.

However, businesses believe that the challenge of applying green logistics activities in Vietnam is infrastructure and financial resources, in which the financial capacity of businesses is the internal factor that has the greatest impact on the development of green logistics.

The awareness and understanding of logistics enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises in the field of transportation and warehousing, regarding greening the logistics industry is still incorrect and insufficient.

According to Mr. Do Xuan Quang, in the green transformation race, the Government is considering more policies to encourage and promote businesses towards developing green logistics, especially small and medium enterprises.

For example, there are tax incentives, creating motivation and reducing costs for businesses, encouraging the use of alternative energy sources in road transport, encouraging changes in transport modes according to the multimodal transport model, building carbon credits...

What is green transport?

According to logistics experts, green transportation is implemented through two common methods: replacing vehicles using internal combustion engines with vehicles using electric or hybrid energy and using biofuels and sustainable fuels.

Green transport also includes activities to optimize transport capacity and transport routes through the application of technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, especially in last-mile delivery.

Even the change in transportation method from road to waterway and railway applied by some businesses has been economically and environmentally feasible.

For example, Sapporo Vietnam Ltd. has switched the method of transporting beverage products from its factory in Long An to consumers in the North from road to waterway since 2020. It is estimated that annual greenhouse gas emissions will reduce by 450 tons of CO₂.
