This young girl's name is Wei Zhen Fang, born in Changlin village, Linshu county, Linyi city, Shandong province (China) in a farming family.
One day in December 1977, Wei Zhenfang (then 21 years old) went to work in the fields as usual. After digging a few times, the young girl found an object the size of an egg with a pale yellow glow. Wei did not know what it was at the time, so she brought it home and showed it to her father.
Wei Zhen Fang found a strange stone while digging the ground.
Immediately after seeing the strange stone that his daughter brought home, Mr. Wei was worried because this could be a valuable treasure and his family would become the target of bad guys.
Somehow, the news of Wei Zhenfang picking up the strange stone spread far and wide. Many local leaders went to the girl's house to persuade her and her family to hand over the stone to the government because it might have research value.
Wei Zhenfang’s father initially refused to hand over the stone, believing that it would attract ulterior motives. He even claimed that the object his daughter had picked up while digging was actually just an ordinary stone with a slightly different color.
However, Ms. Nguy later convinced her father to hand the stone over to the authorities, because she feared it would fall into the wrong hands and the family would have difficulty living in peace.
What is the strange stone really?
Initially, experts speculated that the stone Wei Zhenfang picked up might be a diamond.
After checking and performing some tests, experts discovered that the stone that Ms. Wei picked up was a diamond. With a mass of 158.7869 carats, this diamond was valued by experts at up to 1 billion NDT (equivalent to about 3,300 billion VND). This was an astronomical price at that time. Even Wei Zhenfang and her family were very surprised to hear this information. The stone that initially looked ordinary turned out to be worth a huge fortune.
Because this diamond was found in Thuong Lam village, Lam Thuat district, experts named it "Thang Lam Diamond".
The shiny stone that Wei Zhenfang found was pale yellow.
This is the largest natural diamond found in China. This treasure is as clear as water. At that time, it was considered the rarest diamond in the world and was classified as a national treasure.
Wei Zhenfang's voluntary donation of a diamond worth 3,300 billion VND made her name famous throughout Shandong Province and caused a stir across the country. Many people even called her the "diamond girl".
At that time, in order to recognize Wei Zhenfang's achievements, the Shandong provincial leaders asked her what reward she wanted.
After some hesitation, Wei Zhenfang suggested that she should ask for a tractor because her production team in the village was working very hard. A tractor would make their farming work more convenient.
No one expected that even when asked about her desire to receive a reward, she would always think of the collective, instead of her own interests. Everyone present there admired the young girl.
The next day, a new tractor was presented to Wei Zhenfang's production team in Changlin Village, and 1,000 yuan was given to her personally.
Thanks to her fame for finding precious diamonds and returning them to the state, Wei Zhenfang was arranged to become a worker in a coal mine. Thanks to that, her family's life and economic conditions also improved.
Wei Zhenfang took a souvenir photo with the diamond she accidentally found.
No regrets after returning the treasure
After getting married, Wei Zhenfang’s life changed a lot. In the 1980s, her husband (also a coal mine worker) suddenly fell seriously ill, causing her family a lot of difficulties. To have money to pay for her husband’s medical treatment, her family had to sell many assets. However, instead of complaining or reporting to the authorities about her family’s difficult situation, Wei chose to quietly shoulder the financial burden.
Many people believe that she has made great contributions in finding national treasures, so she can receive well-deserved help. However, Ms. Wei always believes that there are many people in society who have suffered more than her, so she cannot demand benefits just because she has made a small contribution to the country.
Even in her old age, Ms. Wei Zhen Fang still has no regrets about returning thousands of billions worth of diamonds to the state. For her, the health and peace of her family are the most precious things.
Many years later, Wei Zhenfang’s husband was still sick. By the late 1990s, someone knew about her situation and asked the local authorities to classify her family as a poor household in need of assistance. Since then, Wei’s husband was cured and gradually recovered, and her family’s difficulties have eased.
As he got older, his husband's memory declined due to the after-effects of a serious illness he had when he was young, but Ms. Nguy was always there to talk to him so that he wouldn't forget all the old stories of the family.
Although Wei Zhenfang's life was very difficult, when she got old, many people asked her if she regretted returning the 3,300 billion VND diamond to the state, she always answered no. According to Ms. Wei, returning the treasure was a necessary thing to do for the national interest. Because for her, health and family peace are what she cherishes the most, even more than the time she picked up the diamond worth thousands of billions of VND.
