At the Intel Foundry Direct Connect event held on February 22 (Vietnam time) in San Jose (California, USA), artificial intelligence (AI) was considered a key driving force to create a revolution for the semiconductor chip industry.
The Age of AI
Speaking at the event, Mr. Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, explained the important reason for the corporation to build Intel Foundry - the world's first system chip foundry company. That is the comprehensive dominance of AI in most fields. Thereby, AI is present from internal systems, customer care services, cloud computing, electric vehicles... He cited some research results predicting that the total AI market demand will reach 1,000 billion USD by 2030. Also thanks to AI, the digital economy accounts for more than 15% of the total global economy and will increase to 33% by 2030.

Thereby, CEO Gelsinger said that while in the past, the competition for semiconductor chip development mostly revolved around the issue of increasing cores and clock speeds for chips, now it requires a higher level and a more systematic approach to meet the needs of AI development. Therefore, Intel Foundry was born to provide a comprehensive system for partners to develop semiconductor chips to meet the specialized needs in the current AI era.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Stu Pann, Vice President of Intel Corporation and CEO of Intel Foundry, cited that to run a machine learning model to develop AI, it may currently require hundreds of thousands of central processing units (CPUs) and will soon require millions of CPUs for each machine learning model. Therefore, if the 2000s with the development of wireless connection technology helped the laptop market explode, the AI era will promote a comprehensive explosion for the semiconductor chip industry.
Speaking at Intel Foundry Direct Connect, Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI (the developer of ChatGPT), also emphasized that AI systems need to be continuously "taught" to become more effective.
Changing the supply chain structure
In fact, NVIDIA has been doing well since last year thanks to its H100 graphics processor. Initially, the H100's $35,000 price tag led to concerns that it would be difficult to sell. But the explosion of ChatGPT has made the H100 "in demand" to run applications developed from ChatGPT.
Currently, the world's leading technology giants such as Microsoft, Meta, Google... or even Amazon are also joining the AI development. That not only increases the demand for semiconductor chips but also leads to changes in the structure of the semiconductor industry when Microsoft, Meta, Google... also aim to develop chip lines suitable for the AI development characteristics that these companies are pursuing.
After a period of dependence on NVIDIA chips, Microsoft is also increasing its autonomy. Speaking online at the Intel Foundry Direct Connect event, Microsoft President and CEO Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft has selected a chip design that they plan to manufacture on the Intel 18A process to collaborate with Intel. Mr. Nadella shared: "We are in the midst of a very exciting platform transformation. This will accelerate the productivity of every organization and the entire industry." The transformation he said is the explosive growth of AI.
On a more macro level, at the national level, also speaking at the event, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized that strengthening AI competitiveness requires autonomy in the semiconductor supply chain, which is key to national position. This also opens up more diversity and balance in semiconductor supply sources, contributing to the restructuring of the industry's supply chain.
Google suspends AI modeling application
Yesterday, CNN reported that Google is suspending Gemini, an AI tool that generates images, after it was criticized on social media for creating historically inaccurate images. Typically, when asked to "create a picture of a German soldier in 1943", Gemini produced an image of a black man wearing a German uniform during World War II. Therefore, Google is suspending Gemini to review and fix the error.
