Electricity consumption increased by 7.8%
During the Lunar New Year holiday of At Ty 2025 (from January 25, 2025, the 26th day of the 12th lunar month to February 2, 2025, the 5th day of Tet), Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) coordinated with the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company (NSMO) to ensure safe and stable electricity supply to serve people nationwide to welcome the Spring of At Ty 2025.
According to data from NSMO, the highest daily power consumption of the entire national power system during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday is only about 29,007 MW, the average daily electricity consumption during the Lunar New Year holiday is about 528.1 million kWh/day.
Statistics show that the national electricity consumption during the 2025 Lunar New Year decreased by 33.4% compared to normal days of the week before Tet. However, the average daily electricity consumption during the 2025 Lunar New Year was still 7.8% higher than the same period during the 2024 Lunar New Year.
As NSMO had previously predicted, the national electricity demand during the Lunar New Year has decreased significantly compared to normal days. According to actual statistics, during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the national load capacity during off-peak hours was only 12,275 MW at night (January 29, 2025, the first day of Tet), corresponding to a decrease of about 50% compared to normal days.
Checking the electrical system on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025 |
With low electricity consumption during the Tet holiday, many types of power sources are forced to reduce generation to match load demand. In fact, for the current power system, to ensure safe and stable operation of the power system, NSMO is required to maintain a number of traditional power plants (such as coal-fired thermal power, gas turbines, hydropower, etc.) at a minimum level to ensure inertia and stability for the power system as well as have enough reserve capacity in case of power failures or unusual fluctuations in actual operation.
Therefore, when the load capacity is too low, traditional sources have stopped/reduced generation to the technical limit but the total generation capacity still exceeds the consumption demand, leading to the mandatory requirement to adjust and reduce the mobilized capacity from all types of power sources, including renewable energy sources (such as small hydropower, solar power, wind power) to ensure safe operation of the national power system.

Power grid operates safely during Tet
EVN's power source and grid operators have strictly followed the dispatch orders from NSMO and the Regional Power System Dispatch Center, contributing to ensuring the safe operation of the national power system, without causing incidents and affecting power supply during the Lunar New Year 2025.
Thanks to the proactive preparation of EVN and its member units on detailed plans to ensure safe and stable power supply, enhanced on-call organization, ready human resources, means, materials and equipment to handle incidents and prevent fires and explosions, during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, EVN's power plants and the entire power transmission and distribution grid system operated safely and stably.
Details of daily output, peak capacity (Pmax) during Tet At Ty |
A few incidents occurred on the distribution grid due to people violating the grid safety corridor (such as flying kites, balloons, shooting tinsel, etc.) on the lines, which were promptly handled by the on-duty forces, restoring power supply as soon as possible. During the recent Tet holiday, there were no recorded electrical work accidents or electrical fires or explosions. In addition, all units in EVN have seriously implemented disease prevention measures in accordance with the instructions of the authorities.
Mr. Vu Xuan Khu (NSMO) affirmed: the electricity supply situation for production and daily life during the Lunar New Year, from January 25, 2025 to February 1, 2025, is well prepared and implemented according to the set plan. |
