Plant Protection Department inspects rice pests and diseases in Ninh Binh province

Comrade Nguyen Quy Duong, Deputy Director of Plant Protection Department and the working delegation inspected Khanh Nhac commune, Yen Khanh district.

Receiving and working with the delegation were leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (PPP) of the province.

Reporting at the meeting, the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: In the 2024 Summer-Autumn Crop, the whole province planted over 31,000 hectares of rice. However, due to the impact of heavy rains lasting from July 13 to July 25, 2024, many newly planted rice areas were flooded and had to be pruned and replanted. Therefore, the whole province will basically finish planting by August 5, 2024, 10-15 days later than the 2023 Summer-Autumn Crop.

Up to this point, most of the rice areas in the province are growing and developing well, with about 5,000 hectares of rice flowering, mainly concentrated in Nho Quan, Yen Mo and Yen Khanh districts.

Regarding the pest situation, this crop, the time of occurrence of harmful organisms is later than the average of many years and later than the 2023 Summer-Autumn crop by 5-7 days. The total area infected with harmful organisms in the whole province as of August 29, 2024 is nearly 18,800 hectares, of which the heavily infected area is 4,046.9 hectares. The area that has been prevented is 5,475 hectares. The main harmful organisms are: small leaf roller, brown planthopper, white-backed planthopper, silver leaf disease, ... with the same level of damage as the 2023 Summer-Autumn crop.

The delegation inspected the situation of pests and diseases on rice in Kim Son district.

After listening to the report and inspecting the fields in Yen Khanh, Yen Mo, and Kim Son districts, comrade Nguyen Quy Duong, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department, acknowledged the efforts in directing and achieving the results of the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop up to this point in Ninh Binh.

He noted that this year, Ninh Binh as well as some other localities such as Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, Thai Binh... were affected by the heavy rains at the beginning of the season, causing many areas to be flooded, requiring pruning and replanting. Therefore, there will be many different rice fields, especially those that are replanted and will not be able to fully flower until early or mid-October. The risk of the last generation of stem borers and leaf rollers accumulating and causing damage is very high.

In addition, with heavy rain, brown spot and leaf blight diseases also need attention. More worrying is the situation of late flowering rice encountering early cold weather which can affect the pollination process, cause grain to be empty, and affect productivity. Therefore, the province must pay special attention, assign staff to closely monitor the fields, clearly distinguish the rice fields, and, depending on the specific situation in each locality, identify the main harmful organisms to determine the specific time, time, and timely and effective prevention measures, ensuring safe and successful production of the Summer-Autumn crop.
