Crabs raised by Mr. To Van Thong's family in Tan An Tay commune, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau have been dying sporadically since the beginning of the year. However, the situation has recently worsened. Some of the crabs have washed ashore and died, while the harvested crabs brought ashore have also died and cannot be sold.
This situation also occurred in Nam Can district. Mr. Le Hoang Xam, in Hang Vinh commune, said that the crab deaths have been going on for about a month now. After the crabs, the farmed shrimp also died.
“ The crab situation in my pond is estimated to be about 80% dead. When the crab opens, its internal organs are black, while its meat is pink, just like last year. The crabs die, causing damage to the shrimp. Maybe the crabs die and the shrimp eat them or something, I don’t know, but the shrimps are also damaged. Currently, my crabs and shrimps continue to die ,” Mr. Xam said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nghi Le, Head of the Agricultural Extension Station of Nam Can District, crab losses in the area have been occurring since the end of February. Crabs have died in all communes and towns. Farmers have suffered losses of 20-30%, with some households suffering losses of 60-70%.
Regarding the cause, Mr. Nguyen Nghi Le explained: “ After the relevant departments and functional units analyzed and evaluated, this is also one of the recurring symptoms of the past 2 years. The cause of crab deaths is parasites. Up to this point, there is no solution, nor is there any specific medicine to treat this pathogen. Therefore, we will continue to strengthen propaganda and guide crab farmers on temporary measures to minimize damage to the people .”
Ca Mau province has a combined shrimp and crab farming area of about 250,000 hectares. The mass death of crabs at this time in districts with large production such as Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Dam Doi, Phu Tan,... also occurred in 2021 and 2022.
