The crabs raised by Mr. To Van Thong's family in Tan An Tay commune, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province , have been dying sporadically since the beginning of the year. However, the situation has worsened recently. Some crabs have died along the shore, and those that were harvested and brought ashore have also died, making them unsaleable.
The mass death of farmed crabs in Ngoc Hien district has caused significant losses for local people.
This situation is also occurring in Nam Can district. Mr. Le Hoang Xam, from Hang Vinh commune, said that the crab deaths have been happening for about a month now. After the crabs, farmed shrimp also died.
“ About 80% of the crabs in my pond have died. When the crabs open up, their internal organs are black, but the meat is pink, just like last year. The crab deaths have also caused damage to the shrimp. Perhaps the shrimp ate the dead crabs or something else, I don't know yet, but the shrimp are also suffering losses. Currently, my crabs and shrimp are still dying ,” Mr. Xam said.
In Nam Can district, crab deaths are occurring on a large scale.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nghi Le, Head of the Agricultural Extension Station in Nam Can District, the damage to crabs in the area began in late February. Crabs are dying in all communes and towns. Farmers are suffering losses of 20-30%, with some households experiencing losses of 60-70%.
Regarding the cause, Mr. Nguyen Nghi Le explained: “ After analysis and assessment by relevant professional departments and functional units, this is a repeat of the situation from two years ago. The cause of the crab deaths is parasites. To date, there is no solution, nor any specific drug to treat this disease. Therefore, we will continue to strengthen our efforts in disseminating information and guiding crab farmers on temporary measures to minimize losses .”
The cause of death for the crabs has been identified as parasitic infection, but there is still no effective solution to prevent it.
Ca Mau province has approximately 250,000 hectares dedicated to integrated shrimp and crab farming. The current mass crab deaths in high-producing districts such as Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Dam Doi, and Phu Tan have also occurred in 2021 and 2022.
