Mr. Mac used to row a boat up the Long Dai River, bringing goods from the lowlands to exchange with the people of the Truong Son mountain commune. Through conversations, Mr. Mac learned that many students dropped out of school after finishing 9th grade because the high school was far away. Many of them came from poor families and did not have money to rent a room, so their studies were interrupted.

Since Mrs. Mac’s house was near the high school, she discussed with her husband about welcoming students from Truong Son commune to live in her house. For 32 years now, her family’s small house has been home to many generations of students.

"Some years, there are at least 3-4 children, some years nearly a dozen children come to live here. I set aside 2 outside rooms and add extra beds for them to sleep and study. Whenever a child graduates from high school, I am very happy, so that they can go to college or university, and in the future, come back to build their homeland," Mr. Mac shared.

The house of Mr. Mac's family was built a long time ago and is now in disrepair, but Mr. Mac's love for his students in the mountainous region is always open. In 2007, when her husband died of a serious illness and her only son died in a traffic accident, Mr. Mac still suppressed her pain, tried to overcome the difficulties, and continued to take care of poor students.

"The greatest joy is that the children can go to school and have a good future. Every Tet holiday, the children who used to live at my house come back to visit, buy gifts, and talk about the past. It's so much fun," Mr. Mac said with a smile (Photo: Tien Thanh).

Mr. Mac believes that he must help children in the mountainous commune of Truong Son, because going to school is the path that brings hope to escape poverty. He himself is the son of a martyr and a party member for more than 55 years.

"My house has welcomed many students from Truong Son commune to live and study in high school. The greatest joy is that the children can go to school and have a good future. Every Tet holiday, the children who used to live in my house come back to visit and talk about the past, it's so much fun," Mr. Mac said with a smile.

"As long as you are healthy, you can take care of poor students"

Every day, Mr. Mac still walks to the market, buys food to cook rice, so that the students have enough meals.

Many people knew about his difficulties, so in 2020 they donated an old rice cooker and a small refrigerator, which made him very happy. Currently, there are 4 high school students staying at Mr. Mac's house.

The children were loved and guided by the old man. They were all obedient, tried to study hard, and helped him in their free time.

"He loved us very much, taking care of our food, sleep, and reminding us to study. After school, we would take turns helping him with housework, cleaning the garden, and cooking. He always told us that as long as he was strong and could take care of us, we could study with peace of mind. His house was small, but his love was always full, we will never forget his kindness," said Vo Thi Uyen Nhi, a 10th grade student at Quang Ninh High School.

Mr. Hoang Trong Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Truong Son commune, shared that almost everyone in this mountainous commune knows Mr. Mac.

Among the students at Ms. Mac's house, many have graduated from university and college and returned to the commune to work as teachers or commune officials. Many have started families and have stable jobs. Moved by Ms. Tran Thi Mac's kindness, recently, the leaders of the People's Committee of Truong Son commune, in collaboration with the People's Committee of Xuan Ninh commune, presented her with a certificate of merit.

He said that his daughter-in-law and grandchildren now have their own houses. He told his children and grandchildren that when he is "100 years old", they should take care of poor students for him.

The greatest wish of Mr. Marx after he "passed away" was that someone would be generous enough to build a solid house on his garden, so that Truong Son students could live there for free and study in peace.
