Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Luu, 75 years old, from Long An, earned a degree in Pharmacy, after regularly traveling about 120 km to school every weekend for the past 4 years.
On the morning of October 29, Ms. Luu was one of 2,600 students awarded bachelor's degrees by Nam Can Tho University. She was also the oldest.
Holding her excellent Pharmacy degree in hand, Ms. Luu was very emotional.
"I am happy and proud to have successfully completed the program I love, fulfilling a dream I have cherished for decades," she said, and thanked the lecturers for their dedicated help to make this happy day possible.
Ms. Luu currently lives in Tan An City, Long An Province. She has three children who are all in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. Her husband passed away 30 years ago due to a serious illness.
When she was young, she really wanted to study Pharmacy but her family did not have the means. Ms. Luu later became a primary school teacher. In 2003, when she retired, she began thinking about fulfilling her youthful dream. That same year, she studied intermediate pharmacy and then went to college of pharmacy. In 2020, at the age of 72, she decided to continue her studies to university level.
"From then on, every weekend I had to wake up at 3am to take the bus from Long An to Can Tho to study," Ms. Luu said.
The oldest student of Nam Can Tho University believes that in studying, the important thing is to try and make an effort, attend classes regularly, actively listen to teachers and take notes. She also tries hard to read more books and newspapers to expand her knowledge and find suitable learning methods.
"With this degree, I will open a pharmacy," the old woman said, hoping to have good health to use the knowledge she has learned to help society.
Dr. Do Van Mai, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Nam Can Tho University, said that despite her age, Ms. Luu was very diligent and sociable throughout her studies. She was passionate about studying, always researching and learning from teachers as well as fellow students. Therefore, she was admired by lecturers and students.
"Mrs. Luu's efforts and overcoming difficulties are admirable and bring success, as evidenced by the fact that she graduated from university with honors, on time," said Dr. Mai, adding that this is a shining example for her juniors and children to follow.
