Analyzing the factors that increased the CPI in the second quarter and the first 6 months of 2024, the General Statistics Office said that in the 2023-2024 school year, a number of provinces and centrally run cities increased tuition fees according to the Resolution of the Provincial People's Council. At the same time, medical service prices were adjusted according to Circular No. 22/2023/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health.
Specifically, the price index of the education group in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 8.15%, and in the first 6 months of the year increased by 8.58% over the same period last year. The price index of the medicine and medical services group in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 7.63%, and in the first 6 months of the year increased by 7.07% over the same period last year.
In addition, the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials groups, food and catering services groups also increased in price due to high consumer demand, increasing the overall CPI.
Of which, the price index of housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials increased by 5.62% in the second quarter of 2024, and by 5.51% in the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period last year. The price index of food and catering services increased by 4.48% in the second quarter of 2024, and by 4% in the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period last year.
On the contrary, the price index of the postal and telecommunications group is the reason for the CPI decrease in the second quarter and the first 6 months of 2024 due to the decrease in the price of old generation phones when businesses apply discount programs to stimulate demand for smartphones launched on the market after a period of time.
Specifically, the price index of the post and telecommunications group decreased by 1.36% in the second quarter and by 1.41% in the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
Core CPI (CPI excluding food, fresh food, energy and state-managed goods, including health and education services) in June 2024 increased by 0.18% over the previous month and by 2.61% over the same period last year.
Data from the General Statistics Office also shows that, on average, in the first 6 months of 2024, core inflation increased by 2.75% over the same period in 2023, lower than the average CPI (up 4.08%), mainly due to the prices of food, electricity, education services and health services being factors that increase the CPI, but are in the group of goods excluded from the list of core inflation calculations.
