Real Madrid entered the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal at the Bernabeu early on April 17 with great pressure after losing 3-0 in the first leg. However, the home team continued to lose with a score of 1-2, thereby officially saying goodbye to the European arena.
Speaking after the match, Courtois said Real Madrid lacked sharpness in attack, especially when Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham could not leave their mark on the match.
"We played too many high passes, but we didn't have a player like Joselu inside," Courtois said. "Maybe we should have reduced the number of those passes and tried other options. We need to be self-critical."
Real Madrid had 18 shots against Arsenal, but only 3 were on target and scored 1 goal. Striker Kylian Mbappe disappointed when he did not have a single shot on target in 75 minutes of play. Real Madrid's only goal was scored by Vinicius in the 67th minute.
Courtois admitted Arsenal deserved to go through after their impressive performances over the two legs. "Arsenal played better than us, that's why they're through," he said. "Real Madrid still have a long season ahead: La Liga, the Copa del Rey final in 10 days, and then the Club World Cup. We have to improve our performances."
Real Madrid are currently second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Barcelona, with seven games remaining.
