Recently, UNESCO officially honored Lang Son Geopark as a Global Geopark, bringing Vietnam into the list of 50 countries owning 229 parks in the Global Geopark Network.

Million year old geological treasure

Nestled among majestic limestone mountains in northern Vietnam, Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark is a natural epic that tells the story of Earth's evolution over millions of years.

The ancient rock layers here preserve traces of the ancient seabed, which was once home to trilobites and stone pens – the first marine creatures to live in colonies. As the sea receded, layers of shale, sandstone and limestone were laid down, creating a unique volcanic landscape.

The park's highlight is the Na Yang Basin, a natural depression that reveals a tropical ecosystem 40-20 million years ago with rich fossils of plants and animals. The area provides valuable clues about the migration of mammals between continents.

In addition, the Bac Son limestone massif, formed from ancient marine sediments, preserves traces of prehistoric inhabitants through stone tools, pottery and burial sites, providing insight into human history in Vietnam.

Lang Son’s unique geology also contributes to shaping local agriculture. The mineral-rich soil here creates ideal conditions for growing specialty crops such as custard apple and star anise, which have become an important source of livelihood for the people.

Colorful cultural heritage

Lang Son Geopark is not only a natural wonder but also the cultural cradle of the Kinh, Nung, Tay and Dao ethnic groups.

These communities have preserved their unique languages, crafts and traditions, creating a colorful cultural mosaic. Among them, the Mother Goddess religion, with its rituals of spirit mediumship, music and storytelling, is the center of spiritual life, honoring the deities who govern heaven, earth, mountains, forests and water.

The art of Then singing, likened to the “rhythm of the fairies”, combined with the sound of the Tinh lute, is an intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The vibrant festivals, traditional costumes and folk arts in Lang Son are not only a source of pride for the community but also a bridge between the past and the present, attracting tourists from all over.

Golden opportunity for Lang Son to develop sustainable tourism

Being recognized by UNESCO brings Lang Son golden opportunities to develop sustainable tourism, attract international tourists, and promote the local economy through geological, cultural and ecological discovery tours.

The locality also needs to do a good job of heritage conservation, strengthen management and protection of geological, cultural and biodiversity heritage; encourage scientific research projects and educate the community about natural values; connect with the Global Geoparks Network, share experiences and learn from other parks.

With the support of UNESCO and the consensus of the local community, Lang Son is becoming a typical model for heritage conservation and sustainable development. These efforts not only protect the unique values of the land but also contribute to the global sustainable development goals.
