Hana Micron told Nikkei that it would move equipment to a new factory in Bac Giang to “prepare for production” and was busy with customer audits. Bac Giang currently has three Apple suppliers. Hana Micron is a South Korean memory and chip packaging company.

The chip industry was a focus of US President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam in September . The joint statement of the two countries identified one of the strategic cooperation contents as being on innovation, including the development of the semiconductor industry.

American companies such as Amkor and Marvell are also aiming to expand their facilities in the country. A few days later, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also visited the facilities of Nvidia and Synopsys in the US.

Hana Micron's HR Director Hwang Chul Min commented that the Bac Giang project plays an important role in the region's socio-economic development. It will create opportunities to attract more high-tech projects, laying the foundation for the development of a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

A series of recent announcements provide a boost to both Vietnam and global chipmakers, which are looking to diversify their supply chains amid geopolitical challenges.

According to the Bac Giang Provincial Portal, the Hana Micron Vina 2 semiconductor factory in Van Trung Industrial Park (Viet Yen district, Bac Giang) has a total investment capital of nearly 600 million USD on a scale of more than 6 hectares.

By 2025, the company plans to increase its total investment to more than 1 billion USD, with expected revenue reaching 800 million USD and creating jobs for more than 4,000 workers. The company will cooperate with the Vietnam - Korea Industrial Technical College for recruitment.

In addition to the Bac Giang factory, Hana Micron also has a factory in Bac Ninh. The company is looking for personnel for information technology, production planning, and line workers positions.

Bac Giang will facilitate electricity and water to ensure continuous production at the factory. In addition to Hana Micron’s project, the province said another Taiwanese semiconductor factory has been inaugurated and is expected to be operational in 2024.

At the Vietnam Business Summit themed “Connecting Vietnam with the Southeast Asian semiconductor industry ecosystem”, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung stated that Vietnam has many potentials and opportunities to develop the semiconductor industry ecosystem.

Also at the event, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung said that the draft Strategy for Vietnam's semiconductor industry development to 2030 and vision to 2035 is being developed, and the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Planning and Investment will soon send the strategy for public comments.

One of the key tasks is to accelerate Vietnam's participation in the regional semiconductor ecosystem, attracting global semiconductor businesses to be present and conduct production and research and development in Vietnam. In particular, there will be preferential mechanisms and state support for the semiconductor industry.
