Vietnam becomes an attractive global destination
"Vietnam is the only country that can fully participate in all stages of the semiconductor chain," said Mr. Jensen Huang, Chairman and CEO of NVIDIA Corporation, when visiting Vietnam. Not only the chip industry, new fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain in the country are also receiving great attention from investment funds and global technology corporations.

This comes from Vietnam's special advantages in the context of a volatile world, becoming a safe and stable geopolitical destination for investors and global technology corporations. In addition, by the end of 2024, Vietnam is one of the most open economies in the world with 17 free trade agreements. In the "Socio-economic Report 2024, Solutions to Accelerate Socio-economic Development in 2025", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam is one of the 15 developing countries attracting the largest FDI capital in the world. The average growth rate in 2024 is about 7%, the highest in many years.
Vietnam has also become the focus of international media as technology billionaires continue to visit. In early March 2024, billionaire Bill Gates flew his private jet to Da Nang to seek cooperation opportunities in the field of information technology. Analysts said that Bill Gates' return after 18 years is "proof of Vietnam's growing attractiveness". This was followed by visits by Tim Cook, CEO of Apple; IT legend Narayana Murthy (India)... and most recently, billionaire Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, the world's most valuable chip company. Behind these visits are tens of billions of dollars poured into the technology ecosystem in Vietnam with regional R&D centers, AI factories, and semiconductor centers constantly springing up.
According to billionaire Narayana Murthy, Vietnam is emerging as a global technology destination, reflecting the country’s commitment and investment through hard work, discipline, creativity and ambition. He believes that thanks to these qualities, in the next 20 years, Vietnam will soon become one of the leading developed countries in Asia and among the fastest growing in the world.
Sweet fruits from new technology strategies
Rapid changes in the world create many new opportunities for Vietnam, but important government decisions are the key driving force, helping the country promptly seize new opportunities.
One of the most important strategies of Vietnamese technology in the past year was to develop the semiconductor industry. Instead of planning for only 5 years like most countries in the region, Vietnam has planned a roadmap in 3 stages until 2030, with a vision to 2050 according to the formula C = SET + 1. Accordingly, the development of Vietnam's semiconductor industry (C - chip) is based on 4 factors: (S - Specialized) specialized chip production; (E - Electronics) growth of the electronics industry/electronics industry; (T - Talent) building a team of talented semiconductor engineers; (+1) creating Vietnam to become a new safe destination for the global semiconductor supply chain. The long-term goal is that Vietnam can fully participate in all 3 main production stages, including chip design, manufacturing and packaging.
As a result, not only have the world's leading chip manufacturers such as Intel, Amkor, Samsung, Synopsys or Hanmi Semiconductor... increased their presence in Vietnam, but domestic technology enterprises such as Viettel and FPT have also boldly invested in R&D, proactively designing and manufacturing chips for 5G connectivity, healthcare, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
In addition to semiconductors, last year the Government also issued the National Strategy on Research, Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence to 2030. The goal is to make Vietnam one of the bright spots in AI development globally. In addition to creating a clear legal corridor for technology development and promoting socio-economic development, Vietnam also emphasizes the responsible approach to technology, ensuring it is suitable for Vietnamese culture and avoiding serious impacts and risks to the community. To be self-sufficient in the AI race, Vietnam has its first AI Factory, ready to provide services from January 2025. Building technology infrastructure in Vietnam also ensures that all generated data will be stored and processed within Vietnam's territory, ensuring technological autonomy, national security and promoting AI competitiveness. In early December 2024, the Government and NVIDIA cooperated to open the Vietnam Research and Development Center (VRDC) and the AI Data Center in Vietnam. Immediately after that, NVIDIA recruited a series of positions from engineers to senior managers to work in Vietnam. These are considered the first sweet fruits of Vietnam in the AI race.
If semiconductors and AI are races that require large resources over a long period of time, blockchain is opening up opportunities for Vietnam to lead the world when the National Blockchain Strategy is officially issued. According to the goal by 2030, Vietnam will be among the leading countries in the region and have an international position in the blockchain industry. The strategy also shapes the future legal framework, helping Vietnam improve its competitiveness and integrate with global technology trends. In parallel with the National Blockchain Strategy, the National Assembly is considering the draft law on Digital Technology Industry. This will be a solid initial legal foundation to promote the young but potential blockchain technology application industry.
The National Blockchain Strategy opens up significant opportunities to encourage blockchain applications in industries such as finance, logistics, agriculture and data management, giving service providers more room to grow and develop.
According to experts, efforts to create a favorable environment with strategies, preferential policies, investment promotion programs, competitive labor costs and geopolitical stability are making Vietnam an attractive destination in important global technology fields such as semiconductors, AI, blockchain. However, to be able to seize the opportunity and quickly enter the new era, experts say that Vietnam also needs to quickly complete the legal framework, focus on investing in training high-quality human resources and make appropriate choices in each stage.
